Where do I park to visit the Rotunda at UVA?

Going to Williamsburg for a week stay. On one day of our trip, we%26#39;re coming to Charlottesville to visit Monticello. I first want to have lunch at Jinxs Barbecue, and then stop at the downtown mall. After that I want to take a tour of the Rotunda at UVA. I need some recommendations on where to park at the downtown mall, and at the Rotunda. Thanks for the help.....jonathan

Where do I park to visit the Rotunda at UVA?

There are 2 parking garages (one on Market and one on Water St) and an outdoor parking lot on Water St. next to the garage. Water St and Market St are on either side of the Downtown Mall.

If you stay straight on Emmet St, after passing the Cavalier Inn on the R, you%26#39;ll see a parking garage on you left under the student bookstore. You can walk to the Rotunda from there. If you take a L onto University Ave at the intersection where the Cavalier Inn is, that%26#39;s the street the Rotunda is on. During a week day while school is out of session, you may be able to park on the street.

Be aware that Jinx%26#39;s is really a hole in the wall. It adds to the charm for some. Jinx catered my son%26#39;s HS graduation party a few yrs back- tell him Laura said hi!

For information about parking for a tour of the Rotunda, visit the University of Virginia%26#39;s website. Here is the link for the parking garage on Emmet St. that laurava mentioned: virginia.edu/parking/facilities/central.html

The fee is $2 per hour between 7:30 am and 5 pm.

There is also a small pay parking lot right behind some of the shops on University Ave. From Downtown Mall, take West Main St. west towards the University for about 3/4 of a mile. You will then go under a railroad overpass and the intersection of West Main St. and 14th St. After that intersection, the road becomes University Ave. The alley to the parking lot is about .1 mile after the intersection/overpass on the right; it is the right immediately after you see the CVS convenience store and a sandwich shop called Little John%26#39;s. I don%26#39;t know what the rates are, but I recall it isn%26#39;t that bad.

Also, as laurava mentioned, you may be able to find free parking on the street further down University. If there is nothing on University, try turning right onto Madison Ln. In the summer, there is usually parallel parking along the street there. Nothing there too? At the end of Madison, turn right onto Chancellor St. You may be able to find parallel parking spots along that road as well.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the great tips. I parked downtown beside of the park with the Robert E. Lee statue, and at the Rotunda, I parked on Madison Lane. No problems. The Rotunda tour was neat. UVA campus is really nice.

I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed the visit. Did you ever make it to Jinx%26#39;s?.

Yes, we did go to Jinxs. The food was not quite what I was expecting, but it was okay.

I grew up in the Boston area thinking that barbecue was something you cooked on the grill, so I am not a good judge of it. There are a couple of places in town that many think have quality barbecue. If you%26#39;re ever in C%26#39;ville again, ask on this site.
