Best beaches in Virginia?

Hello everyone! Two adults thinking about taking a trip to the East Coast in September or October. No set itinerary at this point. We have two things we want to do so far. 1.) Tour/go aboard a naval ship near Norfolk. 2.) Spend some relaxing time walking a nice sandy beach with seashells.

Is Virginia Beach the best area for beaches?

Is it going to be too cold in Sept. or Oct. at the beach?

Any other places along the Virginia coast or even into the Carolina%26#39;s?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

The Battleship Wisconsin is open for free tours every day except Monday. As for touring active ships, I think that is done sometimes - when I%26#39;ve been to the waterfront, on occasion there have been ships docked holding an ';open house'; event. Here is a link to info on touring the naval base:

My crystal ball is in for repair, so I can%26#39;t say for sure what the weather will be like -- could be sunny and warm; could be in the middle of a hurricane. Likely September will still be warm enough to swim; October will likely be just great -- no humidity. Obviously the more south you go, the warmer it is likely to be - but the hurricane possibility will exist there too.

VB is not the best beach for shells, but it%26#39;s a beautiful and clean beach.

If you have the time and interest, consider a guided tour (with a Park Ranger) of the Fisherman%26#39;s Island National Wildlife Refuge. Space is very limited, and available only by reservation, but you get to visit an area that is normally closed to the public due to fragile environment and importance to wildlife. Lots of shells BUT you won%26#39;t be allowed to take them....maybe one, if the ranger says it%26#39;s OK. Check it out at www.fws.gov/refuges/profiles/index.cfm…

Happy trails
