mosquitos

Are the mosquitos really that bad in the summer?

mosquitos

Ok, I%26#39;m kidding here, you%26#39;re not going to change your plans because of the skeeters are you? Just buy some insect repellent when you get here and use it if you need it. I know the skeeters are pretty thick on the historic jamestowne island loop drive, it%26#39;s all timber, so if you do the loop, definately use the repellent. Dam the mosquitos, full speed ahead!!

(Sorry, people, I%26#39;m feelin%26#39; quite giddy today!!LOL)

mosquitos

I don%26#39;t know, how bad have you heard they are? As Mary says, when you go to Historic Jamestowne, bug repellent is a good idea, and not just for mosquitos, but for the ';no-see-um'; types too. Part of the area there is swampy. I%26#39;ve never noticed them being a problem in Williamsburg, though.

It%26#39;s good to be giddy! I was asking because when my daughter gets bitten, she swells at the site so she always has to wear repellent (but sometimes the repellent doesn%26#39;t work too well and the itching and swelling is not fun -- it lasts for days) Thanks for the info!

This is tidewater Virginia, and since it is hot and humid, mosquitos and other small biting things are prevalent here. In addition, the horse and oxen droppings on the streets at Colonial Williamsburg attract flies. Ticks are also said to be especially high in number here this year as well.

I am on the streets of Williamsburg and the sites at Jamestown on an almost daily basis, and I never go out, day or evening, without applying insect repellent. And I rarely get bitten, either. So the best rule of thumb is say protected and wear insect repellent.

Another insect that is once again appearing nightly, to the delight of visitors that have rarely or never seen them, are the fireflies, or ';lightening bugs'; as they are known to some. These luminescent little critters are delighting young and old after dark along Nicholson Street near the gaol.

Thank you for all the information. We will have to cover up well.

Hi gogetem,

We never wear insect repellent %26amp; rarely have a problem. %26#39;Needing%26#39; it will really just depend on you as an individual. Mosquitoes drive some crazy while, to others, they are just a fleeting annoyance. Mosquitoes are pesky when they are around, yes. But they also not constantly around - they only come out in the evening when the sun goes down, usually mostly during high-humidity weather, %26amp; the only time they bother you at all is if you are sitting stagnant in one place for a period of time- they are scarce to be found if you are moving at all, even just walking. Even something as small as a nice breeze keeps them away nicely. So, sure, bring the insect repellant just in case, but you may find you don%26#39;t need it at all.

Thanks, I was just concerned because as I said my daughter gets an allergic reaction at the site of a bite, and it swells the diameter of a baseball sometimes. She always has to wear repellent when outside, but if it is humid, sometimes the repellent doesn%26#39;t even work for her, where as they don%26#39;t bother the rest of the family -- they just love her and, unfortunately, her body reacts to it.

Depends where you are from... If you are from Floarida it is not big deal. If you are from the desert watch out!
