Road trip - a short report

I have often read other road trip reports and enjoyed them and got useful info - so here goes - this is our road trip. We booked all our accommodation after reading Tripadvisor reports and were not disappointed at all. I will put individual accommodation reports in the relevant sections.

Day 1,2,3 %26amp; 4 - Washington DC. - I know it%26#39;s not in Virginia - but it is where we flew to! We stayed at the Sofitel. We were there on Memorial Weekend. We saw all the memorials and managed to fit in 2 museums - the Air %26amp; Space and the Museum of American History. We throroughly enjoyed Washington but needed much more time %26amp; energy to see everything we had planned to see.

Day 5 %26amp; 6 - picked up the rental car from Union Station and headed for Annapolis for lunch. We stayed the next 2 nights at St Michaels - I know it is in Maryland and not Virginia but the rest of the places we stayed were in Virginia. We stayed at the Inn at Perry Cabin. It was a great place to relax after the crowds in DC but St Michaels itself was VERY quiet.

Day 7,8 %26amp; 9 - We set off for Virginia Beach for a weekend at the beach. We stayed at the Springfield Suites. En route from St Michaels we stopped for lunch at Chincoteague and were lucky enough to see the wild ponies. Va Beach was just as we expected, a bit brash and noisy but we just relaxed on the beach.

Day 10 %26amp; 11 - Williamsburg - we had 2 full days here and so bought the 2 day pass $45 each. I loved Williamsburg and learnt such a lot. We did a tour of the Governors Palace and the Capitol. Both were short - only about 30 minutes which was plenty long enough. We stayed at the Legacy Of Williansburg B %26amp; B.

Day 12 %26amp; 13 - Charlottesville. We drove along Va 5 from Williamsburg to Richmond. Along that route there are several Plantation Homes you can visit. Do not go the Berkley - it%26#39;s not worth the money. However Shirley Planatation was delightful. In Charlottesville we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn.

We loved Monticello - we were on the first tour of the day at 8.30am - there were only 4 of us and we had a garden tour to ourselves. The new visitors center is amazing but the cafe had a very confusing system for ordering food and resulted in lots of confused visitors and long queues.

Day 14 %26amp; 13 - Luray - we stayed at the Once Upon a Mountain B %26amp; B. We drove from Charlottesville to Luray on the Skyline Drive. I think it is beautiful but the day we were there it was pouring with rain and was so misty we could not see anything of the spectacular views. However we did see plenty wildlfie including wild turkey and deer with their babies. Whilst in Luray we had a go at canoeing on the Shenandoah River - by now the weather was beautiful - the highlight of the trip came at the B %26amp; B - on Saturday morning whilst we were having breakfast a bear came visiting!!

Day 15 - we flew back to the UK from Dulles.

We loved Virginia and really appreciated the southern hospitality and friendliness of everyone we met. I hope this has not been too long and rambling.

Great trip report, glad your trip was enjoyable. You were so lucky to see a bear...I%26#39;ve been in that area many times without seeing even one!
