Busch Gardens this weekend

Hi! My husband are coming to Williamsburg on Thursday evening. We are planning on going to Busch Gardens on Friday. Do you think it will be very crowded since most schools are still in. Also, I know it may rain Friday. If it does, do you think Saturday will be too terrible crowded?

Thanks for the help!

Kathy

Busch Gardens this weekend

Although the weekends are typically more crowded than the weekdays, Fridays will not be as crowded as Saturdays. As long as it is not a constant downpour, I actually prefer to go there on days where rain is looming because it means even less crowds. And there is still so much to do indoors there, including some of the rides, shows, shopping, etc. June rains here are rarely a constant downpour, they are usually very scattered- meaning on 10 minutes, off 60 minutes, then on 5 minutes, %26amp; off again, etc, if you know what I mean. You could save the indoor things as ';just in case%26#39;s'; for any potentially rainy moments, but I wouldn%26#39;t count it out entirely based on some rain. If it rains on Friday, chances are your BG visit could still be a go, %26amp; maybe even better than if it didn%26#39;t rain at all! =)

Busch Gardens this weekend

If it is just off and on showers like that, I am still planning on going Friday. However, I checked the hourly forecast for that day and it says it will most likely be raining all day. I%26#39;m going to keep my fingers crossed. But if it does, we always have Saturday! We won%26#39;t have our two kids with us and long lines should be more bearable without kids! Besides, it is always crowded when we go, I was just hoping to have one trip that we could avoid the crowds. We will be back with the kids later this summer on weekdays, so maybe that time will be better! Thanks for your help!

Kluv,

The forecast here is known for constantly changing %26amp; getting pushed further back. So there%26#39;s still a chance of even no rain at all, trust me! Really the only way to know is to check just the day before. Here%26#39;s hopin our traditional changing forecast maintains it%26#39;s usual fluctuation for your trip! And also that, if it does rain, the current 60% chance for rain will only last for a short period of time (but is still enough to intimidate everyone else planning on going that day, lol) %26amp; the other 40% chance for clear weather lasts the rest of the day for you.

eating?

Is there any place to eat in Colonial Williamsburg that wont cost an arm and a leg???? We have 3 teen boys and I%26#39;m trying to keep dinner at under $80, which is doable at palces like Applebeas and such but we wanted to eat in CW that day.

Thanks

eating?

You may want to have lunch at one of the taverns instead of dinner. The Kings Arms and Shields Tavern serve lunch (one or the other) daily from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., first come, first serve. This would give you the experience of a colonial tavern without dinner prices.

eating?

true, thanks

Are you looking for interpretation with your meal? The lunch suggestion is a good one.

However, if you are just looking for a walk-to-able restaurant, Merchants Square is squeezed between the College of William and Mary and the historic area. It%26#39;s modern but charming, and you might easily wind up there anyway for the shopping. There are several restaurants that might remind you of Applebee%26#39;s. http://merchantssquare.org/

thanks. the prices are really high for a family to eat there in CW

It%26#39;s very true that all the restaurants in Merchant Square (Trellis, Blue Talon, Fat Canary, Berrets) are pricey. So there are two other options:

#1 on Prince George St. there%26#39;s a coffeeshop called Aromas which sells sandwiches, etc. There%26#39;s also some sort of retro hotdog place (I%26#39;ve never been).

#2 Your best bet may be to walk 2 or 3 blocks from Merchant Square along the W%26amp;M campus and go to one of the 3 restaurant/delis at the intersection of Richmond %26amp; Scotland Rds. Both the Green Leafe and Paul%26#39;s Deli have less expensive, quick and easy fare that%26#39;s good.

Another option is Huzzahs if you want to stay in the CW complex. I would describe it as in the same style as a chain restaurant like Applebees. Similarly, there is Seasons in Merchant%26#39;s Square with the added alternative of Stefano%26#39;s behind it if you desire pizza and subs.

I%26#39;m thinking it will take all day just to do CW, from what I%26#39;ve been reading here, lol. I%26#39;m still not sure what part or parts we will try and fit into the one day but after going back and looking at everyhting, I think with only one day to spend, I%26#39;m going to suggest just doing CW to our family. So with that, we would need to eat in CW at least for lunch. Not sure if we will do an evening program or not. I wouyld like to see the witch trial but I%26#39;m not sure if its age appropraite for 8 and up??? Can we bring in a picnic????

Hi lorinjer,

You absolutely can bring in a picnic to CW! (Just no open drinks or food in the colonial buildings or stores of course) A perfect place to spread out a picnic is the huge lush Governor%26#39;s Palace lawn! Wide open, but still some shade trees along the side if you need them. =)

Isn%26#39;t that hot dog place that chazz spoke of called ';Retro%26#39;s';? I%26#39;m thinkin%26#39; it is. We did walk passed it but didn%26#39;t eat there, it%26#39;s on my list, tho. I%26#39;ve heard it has good old time ';soda fountain'; food at very reasonable prices. I think it%26#39;s one block away from the Merchant%26#39;s Square area.

Yes, Retro%26#39;s is just a few door%26#39;s down from Aroma%26#39;s. My husband and I love to grab lunch there when we%26#39;re at CW. We usually get the hot dogs or the grilled chicken sandwiches. I absolutely love the limeade there, too, so I always make sure to get that while I%26#39;m there!

busch gardens vacation help???

We have never been family of four 16, 18 and my husband and myself. We are looking at the bounce tickets How long does it take to go thur busch gardens and get to enjoy it all? Should I be booking 5 nights or 4 nights the other two places I know I can do in a day but what about busch Gardens? Which hotel is best to sleep at and close to parks and restaurants? any advice would be great. Thank you

busch gardens vacation help???

Welcome to Williamsburg! Are you from New England, North Dakota? Just kidding - did you know there really is a New England, North Dakota?

Anyway, my stab at humor aside, I%26#39;d recommend 2 days at CW, a full day at BG, and of course a day at WC. If you stayed 4 nights, that timeline would work. Nice thing about the Bounce ticket is that you could spend half a day at one, then the afternoon and evening at another, mix it up, you know. Then if one day at BG isn%26#39;t enough, you could go back for part of a day.

As to where to stay, without knowing your budget, the Marriott or Courtyard at Kingsmill is close to BG, and not much farther to Colonial Williamsburg or Water Country. But there are many good places to stay. You might do a little research and then come back with questions after you%26#39;ve narrowed it down a little.

early dinner near Seigel Center in Downtown Richmond

Looking for a restaurant for an early dinner following a high school graduation at the VCU Seigel Center on West Broad. Party of 8. Grandparents, parents, aunt, uncle, grad. Nice, sitdown, wait staff. Thanks

early dinner near Seigel Center in Downtown Richmond

I highly recommend Bistro 27, which is about 10 blocks east of the Siegel Center:

http://www.bistrotwentyseven.com/

TJs at the Jefferson Hotel would also be a good choice:

http://www.jeffersonhotel.com/dining_tjs.aspx

as would be Six Burner, which is on Main St in the Fan, but not too far away:

Let me know if you need other or different ideas; there are a lot of restaurants in the area.

  • Fossil Hunting

Hi! We are coming down to the Hampton Roads area and are interested to know if there is anywhere to go nearby to find fossils and/or sharks teeth? I know about Chippokes Plantation and James River, I was wondering if there was anything near or around Hampton Roads/Chesapeake/virginia beach area. Thanks!

    Fossil Hunting

Do you have a military ID? My roommate in college took me to Cheatham Annex (US Naval Supply Center) on the York River to hunt for sharks teeth. I think she prefered that spot in particular because of the lack of foot traffic. But you may have some luck with public access points to the York River.

    Fossil Hunting

It%26#39;s a bit of a drive from here but not from F%26#39;burg, on the Northern Neck at Washington%26#39;s birthplace - Pope%26#39;s Creek - you can find shark teeth.

Washington%26#39;s birth place is a no-no for collecting anything since it%26#39;s Federal property. There%26#39;s a state park nearby as are other public access points.

I know this reply doesn%26#39;t really have anything to do with your original question, but

    Do you have this book:

    amazon.com/Fossil-Collecting-Mid-Atlantic-St…

    ?

We got a copy at the Natural History Museum. It is a GREAT book.

We have a place in Hardy County WVA, and have gone to several of the sites listed in the book and have had amazing luck.

Va Beach local here... if anyone has questions!

I have lived here my entire life but am by no means an expert. But if you have any questions ask and hopefully I can help!

Va Beach local here... if anyone has questions!

my wife and I will be in Va. beach in May. She is on oxygen 24/7. Is there a place that I can rent a wheelchair for a week. We are staying at the Atlantic beach club.

    Thanks for your help

Va Beach local here... if anyone has questions!

Did you try asking the Beach Club if they have one available or where they recommend?

Say that again about where you%26#39;re staying? I%26#39;m familiar with Atlantic Beach Club...but the amusement spot.

I ask because of info on the location we might give you.

At any rate, click here for all kinds of info on doing the beach with a wheelchair...parking, the areas where the ramps on to the sand are, etc.

    tripadvisor.com/Travel-g58277-c5353/Virginia鈥?/a>

Here%26#39;s a link to the only company I have been told about that rents all kinds of mobility equipment for people who need a wheelchair...even a sand beach wheelchair, with those bigger tires that make it easier to move on the sand: http://www.modernmobilityinc.com/rentals.html

They used to serve the oceanfront mainly I think...for travelers in need of setting something up on vacation like yourselves. Now they serve the entire area. I have heard they deliver right to your hotel.

Let me know if that%26#39;s all still the case. It sounds so handy, doesn%26#39;t it.

Also let us know your cross street so we can give you more info.

The entire boardwalk is wonderful for wheels...whether surries or bikes or inline skates or wheelchairs or scooters...since it%26#39;s all concrete.

Sometimes the hotels may have wheelchairs you can use also. Your best bet would be to call and ask your hotel if they offer complimentary wheelchairs you can use. Other than that, the previous comment about the rental company would be your best bet I would think.

sorry. We are staying at the Ocean Beach Club 3401 Atlantic avenue. Thanks for your quick reply and information. Any recommended restaurants?

Is this a good, CLEAN beach for a family? I have a two- year-old and an eight-year-old. We have never been to a beach. Some friends have recommended the Outter Banks of NC, but that is an 11 1/2 hour drive for us.

can you tell me if there is alot of touristy things to do for kids? i cant seem to find anything.

things like ripleys, arcades, mirror mazes, lotsa things like that.

we%26#39;ll have alot of time to kill while my husband is in his conference all day and we have 3 kids. and it wont be warm enough to swim while were there.

oh and i did find the go kart place (only one though?) and it has terrible reviews.

I%26#39;m not sure when you%26#39;re coming. However, if you click on the tab marked Overview, and then follow the links to articles written by travelers, you%26#39;ll find lots of ideas for things to do. I have a Go List for a rainy day but certainly the activities can apply to a regular day as well.

    tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i2217-Rainy_Day鈥?/a>

Which reviews were not good? Motor World? Here%26#39;s my take on reviews: read them with a grain of salt. Look for comments on things that are important to you. Also look at the person who posted the review. Sometimes people sign up and post a negative review and you never see them again. I tend to discount those as people with an ax to grind - they want to get even with the company or they are just trying to stir up trouble or they were expecting champagne on a beer budget. Even good companies can have things go wrong. Basically, ignore the top 10% of postive reviews and bottom 10% of negative reviews and you%26#39;ll get a pretty good picture.

    thanks for the link...

we are coming the last week of March.

and yes that is the go kart place i was talking about. all the reviews were bad! not just a little bad, they all were pretty bad. so thats what made me leary of that place.

Sandbridge recommended but not Siebert Realty

In decades of renting vaction homes, we have never had a bad experience until October 2006 when we rented a vacation home for 2 weeks on Sandridge Beach. The location of the house was perfect (right on the beautiful beach) but the rental agency, Siebert Realty, could not have been less helpful in resolving issues.

The house had not been adequately cleaned or prepared before our arrival. Cleaning did not take place when scheduled during our stay. The heating did not work. Basic supplies on our arrival were inadequate. Sand blocked the driveway.

In response to all calls, the staff at Siebert Realty were rude and unprofessional, and did their best not to deal with any problems. Of the few situations that they did remedy, repeated phone calls were necessary before any result occurred.

In reply to my first letter listing all the issues, their reply included some apologies (too late) and some excuses (irrelevant), but my second and third letters and request for compensation have all been ignored.

If you want to avoid aggravation during what would otherwise be a perfect vacation, I recommend you do NOT use Siebert Realty.

Sandbridge recommended but not Siebert Realty

I find these comments very hard to believe. I%26#39;ve been renting a beach house for my family from Siebert Realty for YEARS (a family tradition) and every single employee is well trained on customer service. No one would ever, ever, be rude to a guests. I heard from one agent that they even hold their own company seminars (they close the office for days) and focus on nothing but customer service and how to improve their company and themselves. BRAVO!!

I just love the folks at Siebert Realty. They are so caring and so warm to their guests, and I would never consider renting from any other company at Sandbridge. I%26#39;m always so suspicious whenever I see a harsh comment like this. Makes me wonder if their competitors might be making posts to get an edge. I could be wrong.

Anyway - for a worryfree vacation at a grogeous, unspoiled beach... my suggestion would be to go through a reputable company like Siebert Realty. Go to www.siebert-realty.com or call 877-422-2200.

Sandbridge recommended but not Siebert Realty

I have to agree w/ xyz54. We had a horrible experience from Siebert Realty also. They must be going downhill because we rented from them before and didnt have problems, but last September, it was so bad, we decided not to return to Sandbrige at all.

We paid $4,000 for an oceanfront house w/ a pool and hot tub. My father had finished chemo so this was supposed to be a special vacation and the only vacation w/ grandkids.

The fridge was broken and I had baby formula to keep cold. They took 2 days before someone looked at it and 3 days to bring a new one. Our carpets were sopping wet. the kitchen was filthy. I had to clean it. The pool filter broke and no one fixed it so we only used the pool the first day. By the end of the week, the water was GREEN.

We were trying so hard to remain optimistic since this was a special vacation. It was so disappointing. No one from Seibert would respond to us.

When we left, we talked to someone about all the problems %26amp; submitted in writing all of the problems. They admitted that they were having problems with this house/owner. The owner used his own housecleaner and Seibert said they were not good. But they also said they had no control over how bad the house looked. They were supposed to get back to us. They didnt do anything.

The reason we are not returning to Sandbridge is that we cannot check out a house before we come. We live 6 hours away. So we have to go by what the realtor tells us. We did not get true information when we booked it.

I dont trust Siebert anymore, and that is why I am sad to say we didnt go back this year. We started going in 2004 and this was going to be our spot. But we cant spend $4,000 and get this poor quality. We cant afford to waste that kind of money and ruin the only vacation we have for a summer.

I would strongly advice against renting from Seibert. If you can check out a house in advance, no matter who you are renting from, that is your best bet. If not, no matter who you rent from, ask them detailed questions about the house. Ask them if they have control over the housecleaning, or if the owner does it. Because I will only rent a house if the realtor who rents it has some jurisdiction over the state of the house. If the realtor is going to say they are not responsible and you dont know who the owner is... well then you are stuck. Like we were.

It is so sad because I really liked it there at first, and Seibert ruined our vacation. it still makes me so sad when I look at the pictures. I remember all the time spent on the phone with Seibert, back and forth to try to get things fixed with no response. All this with toddler twins and a newborn baby, it was just awful.

If you insist on renting from Seibert, MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL THE DETAILS. and if something is wrong when you get there, go to their office and demand they fix it, dont try to call on the phone and think anyone will call you back.

    Good luck.

Also about the comment that I am a competitor making a comment. I am not a competitor. I am a stay at home mom in Pennsylvania. I have never been in the real estate or hotel or travel or vacation business.

I kept a record of the dates we were there, who I spoke with or left messages with, what was wrong with the house and there were many things.

I am only chiming in here because I would hate to have someone have the experience I did. It may be different for you..

if you have been going there for years, well, then you probably know the houses, have your favorite house, and then you call them and they rent them to you and everyone is happy.

But if you go in cold and just want to rent a house, I can tell you for sure that they will try to pawn off one that is sub-par, because when I booked the house Sun Haven last year, they did not reveal the problems. But upon checkout, they admitted they had complaints all summer but the owner was not being responsive to them.

Well that would be understandable if they did something about it, but i see here on this forum that someone rented this same house after we did and it was still not repaired. So the owner must not care and neither does Seibert.

I%26#39;m thinking of going to Sandridge but wonder how crowded the beaches are in the summer, how the waves are. Also, who else rents at Sandridge if you don%26#39;t use Siebert?

There is another company, sandbridge realty. I think there is another one too.....Wendy will know.

We go every summer and the beaches are not crowded at all. We do not go to the public beach access area, we stay by our rented house. The public area is more crowded, but still nothing like Virginia Beach.

It is a great place for a vacation.

Thanks for the response. I contacted Sandridge and have a tentative rental. It looks beautiful, ocean front. We don%26#39;t need high activity; just a place to relax, swim, do a puzzle, regroup before the hectic school year with four kids! Any recommendations for things to do or places to eat, or even things to avoid?

In June 2005 we rented the Sun Haven beach house. There were 21 in our party, my wife%26#39;s side of the family. The house was neat and clean but when my wife and I went to our bedroom to unpack our things we noticed that the closet shelf was not hanging and just laying in the closet. Shortly thereafter a phone call was made to Siebert Realty and soon a guy came and rehung the shelf. He was very nice.

The Sun Haven was the perfect house for all of us. We didn%26#39;t have any big issues, although we did find mouse feces in the kitchen but never saw any mice. I think that the deck on the front of the house needed to be replaced, or at the very least some of the boards needed replacing.

The biggest disappointment we had was that the ocean water was so cold. We expected it to be warm, like when we went to Gulf Shores 2 years before, but that wasn%26#39;t the case. So most of our swimming took place in the pool. It was a great time and one we%26#39;ll always have fond memories of.

So I guess what I%26#39;m saying is is that we had a positive experience at the Sun Haven, Siebert Realty, and Sandbridge Beach.

We have just booked Hidden Treasure on Sandbridge Beach from Siebert Realty. Has anyone ever stayed there?

In regards to rental property in Virginia Beach, VA; particularly the Sandbridge area....

Siebert Realty as well as Sandbridge Realty are responsible for the management of property. They do not ';own'; the homes that are being rented. When guests arrive to a rental property, Siebert (and Sandbridge) hope that the guest will identify any/all problems associated with the house (leaking faucets, broken knobs, A/C not fully fuctioning, etc., etc.). Think of a hotel.... guest check-out, housekeeping comes in and cleans up and ';might'; notice problems that need fixing, new guest checks in....

Housekeeping for Siebert (and Sandbridge) have only a few hours to clean the rental home--in time for the next guest to check-in. Additionally, Siebert (and Sandbridge) may have home owners that REFUSE to make repairs to homes. Siebert and Sandbridge Realty, may identify problems---to the HOME OWNER---however, they cannot MAKE the homeowner fix the problem. In many cases, the homeowner contracts with Siebert/Sandbridge to make necessary repairs. When this is the case, you can expect the home to always be in good condition; however, there is no way for housekeeping to know a toilet is broken, window is cracked, deck boards are buckling, etc. in the short time period they may be ';cleaning'; a home in between guests.

Also, keep in mind, that Realtors are NOT allowed to provide certain information about properties. They can lose their license if they do. For this reason, you may find that Realtor/Property Managers only provide the information the ';OWNER'; states on the rental website (for Siebert or Sandbridge) to avoid potential lawsuits.

With this said, don%26#39;t blame Siebert Realty or for that matter Sandbridge Realty for problems related to a rental property where the owner has indicated ';I, the OWNER, am the ONLY one responsible for making any/all repairs to the rental property.'; If this is what the owner wishes, Siebert/Sandbridge can only agree to the Owner%26#39;s wishes and can only ';hope'; that the owner makes repairs that are identified so that all rental guests have a ';happy stay'; at the rental property.

...don%26#39;t get a bad taste in your mouth for Sieber (or Sandbridge)... keep in mind that some home OWNERS are CHEAP and don%26#39;t want to make repairs to their Sandbridge rental property...but they want to reap all the money they can every summer (and throughout the year in most cases)....

In the future, when you review a website that contains rental property....really look at the property. You will find that there may only be 12 models/styles of ';standard'; homes. You can look at the pictures on the Siebert website and see the exteriors are the same for many. Once you identify the duplicates...ask YOURSELF...why is this 5 bedroom/4 bath home $6000 week and this same home 4 homes down the street is only $3000?????

When you consider this...it may help you to understand why one home is in BEAUTIFUL condition (exterior and interior) and the other is ';QUESTIONABLE'; Also, Siebert (and Sandbridge) will relinquish their property management status with home owners who fail to keep their homes up to standard. This is most likely the situation this woman (fridgerator out for 4 days....) is in.

...give Siebert (and/or Sandbridge) Realty another try... They have been in business for over 30 years. They have 400+ properties that they manage (mostly homes). Sandbridge just reached the 400 mark; but their properties are mostly condominiums. Also remember, the rental property has an OWNER. The OWNER of the property is NOT Siebert Realty (or Sandbridge Realty). If the owner does not want to fix something that is broken, Siebert WILL go in and make the repairs (especially if guests have paid money to reserve the rental property); and they WILL eventually get their money from the OWNER...

Interestly... the OWNERS of the properties that REFUSE to allow Siebert maintenance crew to make repairs are DOCTORS, LAWYERS, JUDGES, ENGINEERS...with 6-figure salaries...who are just plain CHEAP....

There are many issues that are being overlooked when it comes to these properties so KNOW WHAT YOU ARE RENTING ...

The REALLY sad part about those homeowners not wanting to make repairs ...

Recently the Dr. Phil Show aired a story of a wedding couple that rented a house in Sandbridge for their wedding and the deck collapsed with their guests on it.

Experts say it wasn%26#39;t maintained and the homeowner acknowledged he knew it needed maintenance. To add the property was underinsured with a rider on it which exclusively states its a 2nd family home not to be rented. This property was titled to a husband and wife and managed by an LLC owned by the couple and rented on a regular basis.

It%26#39;s a very sad story with these guests paying $500k in combined medical bills. Each was only entitled to $1k each on the med pay regardless of the amount of their bills. Clearly there%26#39;s not enough liability insurance to even cover the bills never mind pay any of these people pain and suffering or compensate them for permanent injuries.

    Know what your renting ...

know when you put 20+ people on a deck of a house that sleeps 21 people that it is safe ...

Know that in the unlikely event that there is an accident at the house you%26#39;ve rented, that there is adequate insurance!

Locals-- Are there ever coupons for Pirates Cove?

If so, where would I find them? TIA!

Locals-- Are there ever coupons for Pirates Cove?

I%26#39;ve never seen any, but there are several discount coupon books available at hotels, restaurants, etc., so it%26#39;s worth a look. One is called the Colonial Guide, and another is Williamsburg Visitor%26#39;s Guide. Also check at the Williamsburg Convention and Visitors Center; here is the website: http://www.visitwilliamsburg.com/index.aspx

Locals-- Are there ever coupons for Pirates Cove?

To my knowledge, they don%26#39;t, but Go Karts Plus has a Putt Putt and they have several different coupons in magazines and I think on their website also. I went to Pirate Cove the other day and think they give a return coupon to anyone who scores under Par if I remember correctly.

National Donut Day - Friday June 5th

There is only one Dunkin Donuts in Williamsburg, it is on Richmond Road at the corner of Bypass %26amp; Richmond Road. It was in the paper that all Dunkin Donuts will give a free donut with the purchase of a Beverage.

Krispy Kreme is giving free donuts with no purchase necessary but unfortunately, there is not one in town, but if you pass by one on the way to or from Williamsburg, be sure to stop %26amp; get a free donut!

    Enjoy!!

can anyone rent thats under 25 in va beach?

Theres a group of guys and girls who range between college seniors and up to 26 years old. Can anyone point me in the direction of anyone willing to rent to this respectful and responsible group?

can anyone rent thats under 25 in va beach?

Well, let me throw out this recent discussion although it talks about both under 21 as well as under 25:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g58277-i63-k277924…

It will refer you to the ol%26#39; word search. As I say there, some hotels have no under 21, some the cut off is 25.

You might also look on vrbo and see what comes up. Don%26#39;t know if you actually mean a house for your large group or hotel rooms/suites.

While I guess a 26 year old could potentially sign a lease, you should make sure it%26#39;s okay that there are however many people and that they are all under 25...or whatever the ages are. You don%26#39;t want to arrive and be turned away or have your vacation interrupted.

Sorry for the hassle. I know it%26#39;s hard on a respectful responsible group.

Do let us know what you find out. It%26#39;s always great to update on this topic and hopefully someone else might chime in with what they%26#39;ve discovered.

can anyone rent thats under 25 in va beach?

    Hi anonymous,

If you are referring to hotels, I%26#39;ve never heard of an age requirement for a hotel being as steep as 25 in this area. The hotels I%26#39;ve stayed in before I was 25, in VA Beach, gave no problem (but that was more than 7 years ago). I know in surrounding cities, it%26#39;s always been just 18 or 21. But, again, that%26#39;s for hotels. Maybe you were referring to house rentals?

I%26#39;ve heard the Cavalier is 25...and houses, vrbo.

Most hotels that mention an age at all...it%26#39;s 21.

In a quick look I saw a couple that said 18. If I ever have some time I should gather the info. However, then I%26#39;d have to double check with the hotel%26#39;s current into and...ay, too much to do:)

Anonymous0888, you might not have a problem if a lot of your group is over 21 but do ask and don%26#39;t just hope. I%26#39;ve heard of situations where a nice group got mixed with the bad boys who were found to be underage...and not questioned until they acted up...and it was a shorter vacation for all.

Let us know what you come up with.

Well everyone in the group is 21 or older. The group consists of two that are 21, three are 22, one is 24 and one is 26. I was really hoping for a house, condo, or apartment rental as opposed to a hotel. I was just wondering if anybody out there knew of a property owner in the area that would rent out to us.

We%26#39;ve addressed this issue before, here: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g58277-i63-k230686…

    If there%26#39;s a house that meets your fancy you might ask the rental agency (Sandbridge, Siebert or Atkinson) to ask the owner if it would be okay. You never know what the owner might say. Some rental owners are probably digging a little deeper for tenants this season than previous seasons. Be honest with who you and what your group is about and the worst they can do is say, ';no.';

In any case, you need to understand that every group of good-for-nothing yokels *say* that they are responsible and reputable so they may just not believe you.

    Good luck!

  • Rock the Block June 5

Rock the Block is a local street party, set on Prince George Street between Henry and Boundary, just one block from the Duke of Gloucester Street. It%26#39;s a benefit for the Williamsburg Land Conservancy, with food and entertainment. Here%26#39;s a link with more info: williamsburgweekends.com/…205.pdf

Also wanted to mention the Saturday morning Farmer%26#39;s Market. In addition to vendors selling locally grown produce, crab cakes, baked goods, fresh cut flowers, etc., there are usually chef demonstrations and entertainment. It%26#39;s held weekly in Merchants Square on the Duke of Gloucester Street. If you%26#39;re staying some place with kitchen facilities, you can pick up some fresh produce and crabcakes that can be fried or broiled, and have a delicious meal. Here%26#39;s the Farmer%26#39;s Market website: http://www.williamsburgfarmersmarket.com/

    Rock the Block June 5

Thanks again, Zoey, for great information. We will be arriving in CW on June 6th and will miss the block party. But, we hope to catch the Farmer%26#39;s Market the following Saturday. The website was so helpful.

    Rock the Block June 5

Thanks for the tip, we will be getting to CW on Friday the 5th. We will check it out.

Sounds pretty neat, Zoey. Of course, I%26#39;ll miss it!! Drat.

Colonial girl and %26#39;burg, have a wonderful time!!

Postcard to self--';Wish I was there';!!

Update - threat of inclement weather (it%26#39;s been raining this evening) has postponed Rock the Block to Saturday, 4 - 10.

Best road coming in/going out to avoid traffic

We%26#39;re going to Virginia Beach again this summer, and I%26#39;ve started to explore new ways of avoiding traffic. Like last year, we%26#39;re driving down using I-81 instead of I-87, thus avoiding New York. Now should we go (1) through Philadelphia down US-13 %26amp; Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, or use (2) Washington Beltway via I-270/I-495 down to I-95 %26amp; Richmond?

I%26#39;ve never done option (2), but I know that using (1) last year we lost around 1-2 hours (Philadelphia, Memorial Bridge, Beaches area). Would option (2) be better than that? (We%26#39;d be getting to Washington around 2-3PM, or Philadelphia around noon)

As far as coming back, we%26#39;ll leave on Saturday morning, so I guess traffic on I-95 going to Richmond/Washington should be low? It would also be a new route for us, always interesting when you have 750 miles to drive! And the Delmarva drive is so tedious, with all the stoplights and speed limits changes you have to carefully watch out for. If I can avoid it, at least one way, that would be nice.

    Thanks!

And while I’m here, I must also give many thanks for all the precious tips that I’ve gotten here over time just reading posts. We ventured out of the “beach” and had lots of fun. My boyfriend, while he still thinks I’m obsessive about planning trips, appreciates all those little “plus”!

Best road coming in/going out to avoid traffic

So glad you enjoy VB. And I know we%26#39;re always happy to help out.

Looks like, yes, Rt. 13 definitely over I 95. Here%26#39;s a recent forum discussion on your topic:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g58277-i63-k280069…

One would hope that on a Saturday morning everyone is heading toward the various beaches in Va., NC and SC, the opposite of the direction in which you%26#39;re driving. There will still be traffic, though. Some people will be heading home from their week stay at the shore; others heading up to vacation in DC, etc.

Ask as many questions as come to mind.

All the best on your trip.

Best road coming in/going out to avoid traffic

I concur. Rt. 13 going down, but 95/495/270 should be better coming back up.

Hitting DC at 2-3pm on the way down will not avoid the rush, you%26#39;ll catch the beginning of it. So timewise, you%26#39;re probably not really losing all that much by taking Rt. 13.

Well, thanks a lot! Seems we%26#39;ll have to suffer Rt. 13 again, I wouldn%26#39;t knowingly jump into Washington traffic when we make a detour to avoid New York... But we%26#39;ll definitely come back using I-95, it will be a change, and I might even convince DBF to stop a night or two in Washington for a quick view of your capital!

Yes, DC traffic is horrendous. Rush hour is something like 6-10 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. or later. And great exodus Friday afternoon/Saturday morning and returns Sunday afternoons from the beaches.

    Have a great trip.

What else can we help you with?

    Motel suggestions please

    Hi from England

Can anyone please suggest a reasonably priced motel in Front Royal for two seniors who will want a good night%26#39;s sleep after an 8 hour flight from London to Washington and a drive from there to Front Royal.

    Motel suggestions please

I haven%26#39;t been out to Front Royal in quite a while but AAA recommends 5 hotels there---4 of which are one-diamond properties and one that is a 3-diamond property.

    The 3-diamond property is:

    Hampton Inn/Front Royal

    9800 Winchester Road

Location: I-66, exit 6, just south

    The 1-diamond properties are:

    Budget Inn

    1122 N. Royal Ave.

Location: I-66, exit 6, 2.2 miles south on US 340/522

    Center City Motel

    416 S. Royal Ave.

Location: I-66, exit 6, 3.5 miles south on US 340

    Relax Inn

    1801 Shenandoah Ave.

Location: I-66, exit 6, 1.5 miles south on US 340/522

    Twi-Lite Motel

    53 W. 14th St.

Location: I-66, exit 6, 2.3 miles south on US 340/522

    -------------

Personally, I would go for the Hampton because 1) It is a 3-diamond property and; 2) It is easy to find once you get off I-66

    --------------------

If you look on the left hand side of this page and click on ';Front Royal Hotels';, you will see that the Hampton Inn gets good reviews. You will also see some hotels listed that don%26#39;t appear in the AAA guide. I suggest you take a look at the reviews of those places, too. It will help you come to an informed decision.

Harpers Ferry, Mt Vernon, and Shenandoah in 3 days?.

We will be in washington dc for 4 days and then visitng surrounding areas. Looking at Harpers Ferry, Mt Vernon, and Shanandoah. Do you think all three of those are doable in 3 days? And any recomendations on lodging at either one base area/hotel or multiple cities and lodging?

Harpers Ferry, Mt Vernon, and Shenandoah in 3 days?.

All 3 locations are within a short driving distance so the trip is doable but much depends on what activities you plan, how much time you want to spend in each location, and how you like to travel (start early-stay late; see everything; see only main points, etc). It%26#39;s easy to spend several days just in Shenandoah NP, but if you want to experience a portion of the Park, travel Skyline Drive, maybe take a short hike(s), it can be done in a day. Assuming your start and stop points are DC....you could take DC to Harpers Ferry and spend the day (and night or proceed to SNP), at SNP stay at Skyland or Big Meadows Lodge if available call asap for reservations, enjoy Skyline Drive and beautiful views, hike (post again if you want hike suggestions or read a few previous posts), stop at Mount Vernon for the day on return to DC. Of course, the reverse route is also possible. Once you know the dates of your trip, post again because the people knowledgable of the DC area can tell you the best days/times/routes to travel based on DC traffic (take their advice, traffic is awful).

Harpers Ferry, Mt Vernon, and Shenandoah in 3 days?.

We will be in DC until 7/5. So, it is a Sunday when we check out of DC hotel. Then we have a 4:00 flight on Wed 7/8 from Dulles. Originally, we envisioned doing a white water rafting trip on the New River, but people on those posts told me the New River is too far to drive to from DC...Thus my scrambling at the last minute trying to figure out how to spend 7/5 - 7/8 :D

    %26lt;stay at Skyland or Big Meadows Lodge if available call asap for reservations, enjoy Skyline Drive and beautiful views, hike (post again if you want hike suggestions%26gt;

Do you know of any easy hikes to see a waterfall and what park entrance should I enter through? I also read some bad reviews on Skyland and Big Meadows. wonder if is has changed since you visited.

CheNop, If your first stop is Mount Vernon or Harpers Ferry, it will be convenient for you to enter SNP at Front Royal. When you begin traveling on Skyline Drive at Front Royal is it milepost 0. Stop at the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (milepost 4.6), ask a ranger for trail suggestions and get trail map. Enjoy the beautiful drive and just beyond milepost 50 you will see parking for Dark Hollow Falls on your left...that is one of the most popular hikes in SNP. It%26#39;s 1.4 miles roundtrip to a 70%26#39; waterfall, very nice but elevation change is 440%26#39;, moderate difficulty.

Also, if you are still considering stops for your trip, Luray Caverns is quite interesting and just off Skyline Drive at milepost 31.5, Route 211.

    Happy trails

    Where should we stay?

Visiting 7/5 - 7/8 with my two daughters, age 20 and 15. What lodging would you recommend for staying at while we are visiting in Charlottesville. Plan to visit Monticello and anything else people recommend. :D

    Where should we stay?

How much are you willing to spend each night? I would recommend that you book ASAP since that is a VERY popular time for visitors to our area. We have the major hotel chains such as Marriott, Hampton Inn, Best Western (in Greene County 30 min from everything), and Holiday Inn. The English Inn not too far from UVA and is a lovely place to stay. Cavalier Inn is within walking distance of the University, and the Omni is right on the Downtown Mall, a pedestrian mall with shops and restaurants.

There is so much to do here. But I suggest you get your accommodations first and then we can find out what your interests are.

    Laura

    Staunton/C'ville area

Any suggestions for good off the beaten path restaurants in this area, i.e. bar-b-que or home style? Places only the local know about?

    Thanks.

Baja Bean Co. is a favorite with locals in Staunton. As is the Millstreet Grille.

Harpers Ferry, Mt Vernon, and Shanandoah in 3 days?

While it is possible to do all three in three days, franckly, it would be exhausting. You don%26#39;t say what time of tyear you are planning your visit, and this may impact your decisions.

Mt. Vernon could take your entire day depending upon how much you enjoy history and what the crowds are like. Often, there is a long line to go through the house, but the new museum there is terrific. Summertime can be hot and humid, so carry lots of water!

Harper%26#39;s Ferry is a very nice place to visit too. Mostly, you will be outdoors walking around the town from building to building. The town is hilly. If it is summertime and you don%26#39;t enjoy the heat, beware. If it is fall, it%26#39;s a great day and the views of the rivers and mountains are wonderful.

Shenandoah is beautiful during all parts of the year. Do you plan to hike or just drive around the area. Caverns? Wineries? What are your interests?

Harpers Ferry, Mt Vernon, and Shanandoah in 3 days?

Yes, when you go to Mt. Vernon you could ostensibly stay in your accommodations for DC. Are you staying in Alexandria or DC? At any rate there are bus trips out to Mt. Vernon along that Parkway route. Yes, tons to do. I remember discussing it a while ago...maybe on the Alexandria forum. Go there anyway...the alexandria forum. While all Va city/town forums come up on the Virginia forum, Va Forum topics don%26#39;t go on other forums and people who frequent the Alexandria forum get just Alexandria I believe. So check on Alexandria...even Washington DC. Do a word search using Mt. Vernon in the little empty box directly above these posts for lots of ideas.

If you can, it would be great if you could go to the Washington Grist Mill and on to Woodlawn Plantation, which Washington gave his...I believe she was his step daughter...on her marriage. Neat house and on the property is the Pope-Leighey House, a Frank Lloyd Write built home. It was moved there. He designed the furniture and all.

But...that could be one day for Mt. V and back to the hotel and another for the rest in south Alexandria area.

If you are driving, that would be handy because coming from the south you could do one of the other two places and then the last one on the way out.

For Harpers Ferry, there is actually a commuter train but that brings people in to Union Station for work in the a.m. and home in the p.m. You could use Amtrak though.

Shenandoah...are you envisioning driving the Blue Ridge Mountains for photos and views or mornings of bird watching, wildflower hunting on a guided ranger tour and afternoon or horseback riding and hiking?

I think, first let us know if you%26#39;re driving to and from Fl. That would be helpful.

    Otherwise, it would be tricky.

We fly to Dulles on 7/1 and will be staying in Downtown DC until 7/5 visiting the monuments, a few museums, and then going with all the other gazillion opeople to see the fireworks on the mall. OUr flight home isn%26#39;t until 7/8 in the evening. Originally, we envisioned white water rafting 7/5 - 7/7 on the New River, but on a forum post, people indicated that is too far of a drive, thus my post here to find things to fill up the 3 days of 7/5 - 7/8. All we do in year round in Florida is go to all the Disney theme parks, Seaworld, and Universal Studios. And occaisionally beach trips to the east coast beaches. So, really any activity other than those, would be interesting to us. Thanks for any suggestions you have. :D

Okay. Hopefully you can walk to the fireworks. Roads can become parking lots. And be flexible. Vast crowds but a great memorable time.

So 7/4 is your last night concentrating on DC? On 7/5 you could stay in your hotel and do Mt. Vernon. No need to spend time checking out and in anywhere else. (In fact, if you taxi to the hotel you won%26#39;t really need a car for a while. Walk/public transportation is great. Take a tour bus to Mt. Vernon.) Check out all there is to do at Mt. Vernon and the Grist Mill and Woodlawn Plantation and Pope Leighey. It might be that...well, if the kids are doing the theme parks they may be young enough so that Woodlawn, etc. is just more of the same. So if you like Mt. Vernon perhaps a day there is enough for them. And maybe the nearby Grist Mill. (It%26#39;s not really walking distance from Mt. Vernon.)

I suggest Mt. Vernon first because that way you won%26#39;t have to change accommodations.

You will by then have done a lot of two things....walking and looking at museum type things/buildings using careful eyes and minds. It would be great to go to the mountains, especially since you%26#39;re from Florida, for a leisurely drive to a location, leisurely hike, nature, amazing views, just sort of vegging out with nature. It%26#39;ll be cooler too. That%26#39;ll be 7/6. Stay over one or two nights. If you want to look at Harper%26#39;s Ferry you can do that on the 8th on the drive back towards the airport.

CheNop, to clarify....I thought of the %26#39;no car%26#39; option near the end of my post and inserted it. So to be clear, as I said, you wouldn%26#39;t want to walk to the Grist Mill....but also Woodlawn is even further. I know about the tour buses to Mt. Vernon but you%26#39;d have to research if there are ones that continue to Woodlawn. You might call them and ask what tour buses go there: http://woodlawn1805.org/

And...it may be that Mt. Vernon is enough before you hit the mountains!

    Do not use Groome Transportation

Groome is a very unreliable service. They never have drivers ready for passengers and making a reservation essentially means nothing. I have tried three times to use this service only to get to the booth and not have any car or driver even though a ';reservation'; had been made. Then I was expected to ride and share a car with other patrons because there were not enough drivers even though I had asked for a private car. Take a cab or hire a real car service and save yourself the aggravation.

    Do not use Groome Transportation

We%26#39;ve had the very same thing happen, multiple times. We have waited 30 minutes or more for a ride, despite having reservations made well in advance, and when a ride came, it was a bus! Nice racket for Groome, as they charged their (steep) usual rate! It was very frustrating as each time it has happened, we were returning home after long flights, trips overseas, etc.

Any suggestions on a GOOD service?

    Do not use Groome Transportation

Regardless of what Groome tells you on the phone, their service from the airport is always a shared car/shuttle service, priced per person. To me, Groome is only a deal if you%26#39;re a single person. For 2 or more, getting a taxi at the airport works out cheaper. No matter how late I%26#39;ve flown in, taxis are always available at RIC.

When I%26#39;m going to the airport, I use Richmond Taxi. Their service is excellent and they drug test their drivers...which if you ever ended up in a taxi with someone you%26#39;re not totally sure is all there...can be a little hairy.

Agreed. I have had two awful experiences with them. The first time, the cab could not find my house and was 45 minutes late in picking me up to travel to the Richmond airport.

The second time, my company arranged car service for transport to Dulles airport. 30 minutes after my scheduled pickup time, I called Groome and they stated that ';they were busy but they were sending a driver out now.'; An hour after my pickup time, the the driver called and said he was lost, because he was new and didn%26#39;t normally work this end of town. He had to stop at a gas station, put the gas station attendant on the phone with me, have the attendant explain where they were located and relay directions that way because of his limited English. He was two hours late by the time he picked me up and instead of a car as requested, he showed up in a rickety, bouncy passenger van - to transport ONE person. He then drove below the speed limit the entire way to DC. I had to run through the airport and made my plane only as the gate was closing.

The driver was very upset that he was late and apologized profusely. He obviously was new and only used to doing the cab run between downtown and the airport. My issue was not with him, but with the company, who never should have sent an inexperienced driver, or should at least have provided GPS to the poor guy. The company did not apologize or seem concerned, and thus, they have lost my business forever.

Thank you very much for your information about Groome which i was going to book with. Now I will check out taxis!!!

    Closest hotels to Monticello ...

We%26#39;ll be driving up from Raleigh, and are interested in staying one night at a convenient location nearby, then driving on to Washington, DC, area the next day. Thanks for any info ... :-)

    Closest hotels to Monticello ...

There%26#39;s Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, and Sleep Inn close to Monticello. On 29N (the route toward DC) there%26#39;s Marriott Courtyard and Fairfield as well as the Hampton Inn. If you want to get further north on 29, but still within 30 min of Monticello, try the Best Western in Ruckersville.

    Closest hotels to Monticello ...

Thank you, Laura. We are thinking of arriving in Charlottesville Thursday early afternoon, spending the night, then going on the earliest (8:30) tour at Monticello Friday morning ... cause it will be hot as the devil, probably ... then on to a wedding in Springfield, VA (right near DC) on Friday evening.

We are grandparents, who will have our 11 year old granddaughter with us. Any suggestions for other historical things/museums that kids might be interested in ... that we might want to do Thursday afternoon? Also, any fun restaurants (like at Margaritaville in Myrtle Beach, they do balloon animals, etc.)?

Thank you so much for your help!

Laura, after looking over hotel reviews here, I%26#39;m considering staying at the Omni downtown, opening onto the Mall. Taking that into consideration, are there things on/near the Mall that kids might enjoy? Thanks again ...

I think the Omni is a great choice. It has an indoor pool and it%26#39;s within walking of many restaurants. There%26#39;s a iceskate park next to the Omni , a glass making studio on 5th Street and Alakazam Toy Store (fun, unusual toys) right on the Mall. There is also the Virginia Discovery Museum geared toward children, but I%26#39;m can%26#39;t rememeber at what age kids become disinterested in it. Check out www.downtowncharlottesville.net for a list of restaurants and shops on the Mall. Check charlottesvillepavillion.com/fridaysafterfiv… to see who%26#39;s playing for free at the pavillion which is on the opposite side of the Mall from the Omni. Chaps, Henry%26#39;s and Christian%26#39;s Pizza all have kid friendly food.

    Have fun!

Looking for peace & quiet in Virginia Beach-suggestions?

My Husband %26amp; I-w/ no kids are contemplating a short 2 day trip there from Ohio next wk 6/10. Looking for a peaceful area on or very near the beach %26amp; good dining...any suggestions please. Thank you!!

Looking for peace %26amp; quiet in Virginia Beach-suggestions?

When I read your subject line I thought...well, it%26#39;ll have to be before peak time and mid week. And...it is:) We%26#39;re surprised when we get away just the two of us to have relative peace and quiet at the beach...meals alone in the outdoor extensions of boardwalk-front restaurants, etc.

Look up the restaurants along the left here that got good reviews.

You might rent a tandem bike - two seater one behind the other - for a romantic retro ride along the boardwalk, say, to Tautog%26#39;s which has bicycle parking and wonderful food. We like to eat on the old porch. (It%26#39;s not waterfront, though, but excellent food.)

You might like the general northern end past the mid section.

Get some sun, take a walk on the boardwalk so enjoy all the sites; bring binoculars to see the ships and sealife, maybe a kite for evening.

Looking for peace %26amp; quiet in Virginia Beach-suggestions?

PS Are you in the mood for, say, Beach Spa Bed and Breakfast, a block or two from the beach?

thank you,any suggestions on a quiet place to stay on virginia beach? Want to be close to ocean %26amp; not far from golf-dont care so much about the nightlife scene at all...please help w/ accomodation suggestions thanks!

Well, the northern end is quieter, the Beach Spa B%26amp;B is very elegant and peaceful.

We also like Springhill Suites at the southern end around 9th. We haven%26#39;t been next door to the brand new Hampton Inn. You might look into that. Of course, you might enjoy a really peaceful time at the Springhill Suites%26#39; pool, cafe-side, sun all day (no building blocking it), water shooting out of the sides dramatically....and then that might be the day the kiddies want to run around it. You never know.

You might kayak, enjoy the newer Town Center, go to a stadium seating movie, visit the boardwalk attractions, including quaint museums in historic cottages...things that are not always the first choice of the masses so to speak so that you might have more quiet.

You might also consider Virginia%26#39;s outer banks....Sandbridge. It%26#39;s quiet, houses, no hotels and a drive to the boardwalk...but that%26#39;s what makes it private and peaceful.

thank you appreciate all the advice!!!!

The Chesapeake bay side of Virginia Beach is always peaceful and quiet. You can sit on the beach and really relax. Walk to the Pier Cafe in your flip flops for a delightful seafood lunch and drinks.

    Staying in Sandbridge Area

I am thinking about renting a house in the Sandbridge Beach area next summer. I noticed you can stay n the beach or on the bay. I am intrested if anyne has an opinion on what might be better. If you stay on the bay do you still have easy beach access without a long walk? If you stay on the beach is there any way to access the bay for fishing? I have never been to ths area, so just don%26#39;t know what to do. Want to please the men who want to fish and the kids and moms who want the beach.

    Staying in Sandbridge Area

Hi, scifity, sorry I haven%26#39;t been fishing in Sandbridge. I know there%26#39;s surf and pier fishing so I looked into it. Here%26#39;s what I found, including info on licenses/or not and the pier for fishing in Sandbridge...just $3/adults, little ones free, opens at 5:30, etc.:

    sandbridgebeachva.com/files/Fishing_SB.htm

    Staying in Sandbridge Area

Sandbridge isn%26#39;t very wide, so the houses on the bay or canals are often still just a few minutes walk from the beach. Most of the houses on the canals or bay have a dock and several even have their own boat ramps that could let your fishermen bring their own boat and fishing gear.

South of Sandbridge road, the canals lead into the bay, which is part of the Currituck Sound that runs all the way to Kitty Hawk. North of Sandbridge, the canals run into a lake, but I%26#39;ve never been there.

Here%26#39;s the ';search by map'; feature offered on Siebert%26#39;s website (Sandbridge Realty%26#39;s website has one just like this too), where you can click on rental properties based on their location:

    www.siebert-realty.com/cgi-bin/maps.pl…

On the map, just trace the path you%26#39;d walk from a house to the beach. For a ballpark rule of thumb, we figure that it takes about a minute for each 3 houses you%26#39;d be walking past.

We prefer being on a canal because it gives houses a little more rear separation, and the water can be pretty to look at. But, if you%26#39;re not renting a house with it%26#39;s own water access, here%26#39;s some info on public access: sandbridgebeachva.com/files/Fishing_SB.htm

    Thank you for the advice.

  • Pungo Strawberry Festival

DON%26#39;T GO to this rip-off, two-bit, red-neck, poorly organized joke of a festival!!! It took us 2 hours to drive 4 miles on a country road to pay $5 for a parking space in a field 3/4 mile from the festival. It%26#39;s nothing but vendors, raffles, carnival rides and over-priced strawberry desserts.

I%26#39;d rather have a root canal than ever venture to Pungo again!!

    Pungo Strawberry Festival

Having lived in Va Beach since 1980 I%26#39;ve been to the Strawberry Festival several times, but we haven%26#39;t been recently. We used to take the kids when they were younger and it was good for about 2-3 hours at the most. The best time to go to avoid that traffic jam is between 9 and 10am. Once it gets close to noon, the traffic is a mess. We always enjoyed getting there early and leaving as the big crowds arrived. The Pungo area is a one stop-light town, so it%26#39;s overwhelmed when that many people arrive at once. But if you go early, you can see everything, get some strawberries and get out by noon.

    Pungo Strawberry Festival

The strawberries are great, but hold the Festival, for me too!

we have been twice and we will never go back. I agree with you 100%!!

What a shame to have such a negative post on this local festival. Yes, traffic can be horrendous, and it usually is hot, crowded, and full of all the normal attractions of such an event. But it%26#39;s a LOCAL festival, never intended to be a big tourist attraction. Frankly, we love the food!! Our local farming and agriculture families have a wonderful time here, and the kids all love it. If you do your homework, you%26#39;ll know that trying to get there, AFTER the early morning hours, is pretty much IMPOSSIBLE, so us locals never even try. You have to get there first thing in the morning, and leave when you have had your fill. I am sorry you had such a terrible experience, but had you asked any true local, you%26#39;d have had an idea of what to expect.

I go every year. It highlights the diversity of Virginia Beach.

Keep in mind that this is by far the largest city in Virginia, and it is not all about the oceanfront.

There is a huge rural area in the city that is unique, given that just a few miles north is a vibrant city center.

The Strawberry Festival is a small event compared to most festivals in Virginia Beach, but it is mostly a local thing. I understand why it would be frustrating to tourists who expect a larger spectacle.

Information for our first trip to Virginia Beach

I am trying to plan a family reunion trip for the summer of 2010 to the Virginia Beach area, and I have never been there myself. We are probably going to rent a house, and right now I am considering staying in the Sandbridge area, because it looked family friendly. We will be traveling with around 22 people ages new born to 84. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also is it a very far drive to get to Virginia Beach from Sandbridge Beach.

Information for our first trip to Virginia Beach

We are from PA and have traveled to Sandbridge for the past 10 yrs or so. It is a wonderful place for a family reunion. They have many large homes for rent and the beaches are less crowded. We have rented from both Sandbridge Realty and Siebert Realty and never had a problem with either one. There websites have lots of pics and information. The drive from Sandbridge Beach to Virginia Beach is approx. 20-30 minutes. Sandbridge is very quiet and only has 2 restaurants and 2-3 gift shops but there are lots of things to do within a 30 minute drive.

Information for our first trip to Virginia Beach

Actually, Sandbridge is close to a pretty large shopping center with lots of restaurants, called Red Mill Commons.

The main resort part of the city is not too far away, but you really don%26#39;t need to go there since you have the ocean right there at Sandbridge.

About a 20-25 minute drive to the northwest takes you to the Town Center of Virginia Beach, which has lots of restaurants, shops and free parking.

Thank you for all the information.

    camping

where can my wife and i go to camp? we want to fish, she wants to lay out in the sun, we would like not to be around people. water electric does not matter. wanna be able to get a lil cazy. can anyone help?

    camping

Most of the campgrounds I am familiar with are in State Parks. The sites are generally fairly close to other campers, but many offer fishing and sunning opportunities. Check the Va State Parks website to see if something interests you, www.dcr.virginia.gov. First Landing in Va Beach is nice, good campsites and right on the Chesapeake Bay. Chippokes in Surry is on the James River and there are lots more, especially if you don%26#39;t mind sunning without a beach...lots of Parks with lakes. Hope this helps and let us know where you decide to go...the rest of us may need a place to go a ';lil cazy'; too!

When I was a kid, we used to go to Janes Island State Park. It is over on the Eastern Shore of MD. Depending on where in VA you are coming from, it may or may not be within your drive time.

    …state.md.us/publiclands/…janesisland.html

The camp ground was always very nice. Nestled in pines. There is a marina and there was a boat that would take you over to the actual island where there is a dock and then you go across to the beach.

If you have a canoe or kyak or can rent or borrow one from a friend, take it. It would be ideal.

Smith Mountain Lake -- beautiful campsites and excellent beach. We were on the lake all last week and fish were jumping! Fishing was great. See my Go List (I need to update it, but here goes):

    Hotel & Wedding.

Hey all, my BF and I are attending a Wedding in August and I%26#39;m trying to find the closest place to stay. The wedding is at Hurkamp Park and the reception is somewhere along Caroline Street. Any suggestions for places to stay that are close-by? I%26#39;d like to find somewhere close to the reception, because it%26#39;s open bar and walking home would be ideal.. if possible..

    thanks..

    Hotel %26amp; Wedding.

The Richard Johnston Inn and the Schooler House Bed %26amp; Breakfast are ON Caroline. Beyond that most of the hotels I%26#39;m familiar with are out on Rt 3 or Rt 1, not in walking distance of the reception. Good luck in your search!

    Hotel %26amp; Wedding.

Hello. I have lived in F%26#39;burg for 27 years, and although I%26#39;ve never stayed at The Richard Johnston Inn, it has been in business for the entire time we%26#39;ve lived here. It is in a very nice old building right on Caroline St, and there is parking in the back. If the reception is farther down Caroline, I would also suggest The Inn at the Old Silk Mill. Hope you have a good time and someday come back to the Burg because it really is a great place to visit.

Crowne Plaza hotel Williamsburg, is it...

suitable for 2 adults %26amp; 2 11yr kids.. We are staying in Williamsburg for 2 nights while we do BG, WaterCountry %26amp; a little shopping !... Rate on line is very good USD102 (room only) for the 4 of us per night.. Any opinions would be very much appreciated !..

Crowne Plaza hotel Williamsburg, is it...

The Crowne Plaza is one of the busiest hotels in Williamsburg, it that tells you anything -- it is conveniently located to BG and Water Country. Rooms are large and the staff is accomodating. Nice pool area, and good bar and restaurant on the premises.

Crowne Plaza hotel Williamsburg, is it...

tks.. Have booked the Embassy Suites as we had stayed there previously with the kids.. so decieded it was the case of %26#39;better the devil you know than the devil you dont !)...

kid friendly place for Sunday Buffet Brunch

Not sure if there is such a place but we were looking for a nice Sunday Buffet Brunch that would be a place that we could take our 7,9 and 11 year old children without it being too formal. Thanks!

  • What exactly are the must do's?

Alright I%26#39;m starting to just make a list of what I HAVE to do. I went to CW less than a year ago, and I didn%26#39;t realize that I hardly saw anything! We will be spending about 3 full days just there, then probably doing something else for the other day. Sorry that I%26#39;ve posted some of it before. I would just love an altogether list.

    DON%26#39;T WANT TO DO:

    Jamestown

    Yorktown

    Busch Gardens

(Yea I know, we were one of the few who didn%26#39;t care for them. I%26#39;m all about CW. sorry. And as for Busch Gardens we didn%26#39;t even have when it was free for us. :/)

A list from each of you would be so nice!!!! Thank you! Here%26#39;s what I%26#39;m looking for mainly.

-What I must do and see in CW specifically. I didn%26#39;t know about half the stuff they had. I looked at the events calendar but I know there%26#39;s ongoing events.

-Where I have to eat in Williamsburg

-What Plantations I have to see. should i see any? that was what our mystery day was going to be.

-Any stores or attractions I must see. (Yankee Candle! LOVED!)

-Just plain anything you think is a must that I didn%26#39;t list! :) I%26#39;m going with my daughter, who is a teen, but an odd ball one. She is much more into kid stuff but at the same time mature. Like a kid who could love a toy store but wouldn%26#39;t be bored one tiny bit at CW. So hopefully that helps!

    THANKS!

What exactly are the must do's?

';Cry Witch'; is a great evening program. It%26#39;s one of the most popular.

One of my favorite stores is the Candy Factory Warehouse up on Richmond Road. This is run by the same company as the Wythe Candy store in Merchants Square. Lots and lots of chocolates, my fave, the giant chocolate turtles, old time retro candy, funny hats, silly kid candy, and when I was there the last time, there was a room full of gourmet items. We stayed in there over an hour and had so much fun. I hear it is in a new bigger building now.

A tour of the Governor%26#39;s Palace and gardens, in case you didn%26#39;t do that on your last visit.

Have you been to the De Witt Wallace/Abby Aldrich Rockefeller museums? Folk art, paintings, furniture, etc. This stays open till 7 (maybe 7:30 not quite sure). That would be a nice place to visit after the CW buildings are closed, or if it%26#39;s raining.

Tons and tons of things I haven%26#39;t done either. And I%26#39;ve been there 8 times.

Good luck with your planning tutu. Oh, yeah, I remember you from your last trip. Glad you enjoyed CW.

What exactly are the must do's?

    1. Palace Tour- make time to see the Gardens,as well as the kitchen. Ask lots of questions!

    2. Revolutionary City- I personally hadn%26#39;t experienced this until recently (even though I have been visiting CW since I was 5!), and it is BY FAR one of the most interesting pieces to the CW puzzle.

    3. If your daughter was older, I would highly recommend visiting Chowning%26#39;s Tavern for the evening Gambols (tavern games and light food, but I think there may be an age limit in the evening)- meeting fellow CW fans and discussing our Williamsburg day over ale and colonial games has been a favorite past time of me and my fiance!

    3. Any and all of the trade shops- your daughter may love the millinery shop, the cobbler, etc. You never know when a particular trade will catch your interest!

    4. Dining: I love Christiana Campbells for seafood. Off site: Food for Thought is excellent. There is an interesting food experience at A Chef%26#39;s Kitchen- it is a cooking demonstration as well as restaurant- very interesting, as well as delicious! I love The Cheese Shoppe for lunch. Walk around Merchant%26#39;s Square to get ideas!

    5. The Peanut Shoppe of Williamsburg. I don%26#39;t know how to explain it, except that when I was little this was THE place to get peanuts and specialty food as souvenirs for everyone (and yourself!). I love the butter toffee peanuts.

I really could go on forever!

The suggestions from OP%26#39;s above are good. Here are a few that I would add as ';must do%26#39;s';:

See the movie, The Story of A Patriot, in the CW Visitors Center, at the beginning of your visit. It does an excellent job of laying the groundwork for your visit to the restored area.

Visit the brickyard. The brickmakers are making bricks now, and you can help by taking off your shoes and getting in the mud with them. Young and old alike find doing this and watching this a real treat.

Visit the wigmaker. Ask her questions about your own hair, and be prepared for some unexpected answers.

Tour the Colonial Capitol. No other place gives the historical overview of the political climate of the time than it does.

Take a carriage ride. To sit in a carriage or wagon and ride about town is special, relaxing and fun. If you decide to do this, make your arranagements early at the Greenhow Lumber House. Be prepared to have your picture taken often by other guests as you ride through town. You%26#39;ll feel special, believe me.

Visit Bruton Parish Church. Religion was a very important of colonial history; to sit in one of the pews and stroll through the graveyard will give you a sense of religous life in the Colony.

Currently the Governor%26#39;s Palace and the Capitol are offering special mid day tours which tell the story of the recreation of these buildings, both of which were reconstructed 75 years ago. These interpretations are excellent, as many visitors wish to know more about how our old town got ';redone'; to its colonial splendor. The ';This Week'; brochure gives exact tour times.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your visit.

Your energy and enthusiasm are palpable ... you%26#39;ll have a great time! You shouldn%26#39;t feel any anxiety about ';doing it right this time';. For a person with a lively interest in almost any aspect of American history or western culture, Williamsburg will deliver abundantly.

One thing I would do is try to involve your daughter(s?) in the planning. She/they can comb the website for topics of interest. I would especially recommend using the search box to explore subject areas. An example would be ';child life'; or ';toys';, which are of special interest to them, I see.

That kind of background research may or may not present you with discrete events to attend or places to visit, but it will give you context that will enrich everything you see and hear in Williamsburg. And, one hopes, that research will contribute to forming a new generation of Williamsburg enthusiasts.

Best of luck, and enjoy your summer travels!

Per your ';mystery day';, I myself enjoy an occassional drive down Rt. 5 visiting the plantations. If you go to just one it should be Berkeley Plantation. It has the most unique history.

It was home to the Harrisons - a historic father (signer of Declaration of Ind.) and son (President) duo. It was site of first Thanksgiving. It was where ';Taps'; originated. And my personal favorite...I read something about it being where bourbon was first distilled.

Shirley Plantation and Sherwood Forrest Plantation are also popular choices.

On the way back from a plantation drive I recommend going off the beaten path in Charles City and dining at a tucked-away waterfront restaurant called The Blue Heron. Good seafood and sunsets.

All the above suggestions are excellent. One program not to miss is one which features a historic character such as Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington or the Marquis de Lafayette. One of them has an ';audience'; in the Palace garden each morning at 10:00 a.m. (currently, time may change during summer). Three days a week, there is a ';conversation'; with one of them at the Kimball Theatre. Reservation tickets may be picked up at any ticket location. These men are outstanding in their portrayals of our founding fathers.

You can pick up a supplementary brochure entitled ';We recommend you see....'; at any ticket location which lists the Palace, Capitol, Courthouse, Randolph House, Magazine, Printing office and Bindery and Blacksmith as must- sees while in CW, especially if here for a short time. It would still take two days to see these sites.

The 75th Anniversary tours of the Capitol take place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mon, Wed. and Fri.; at the Palace from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tues, Thurs. and Sat. These tours are longer, more in depth look at the history and significance of these buildings, so are not recommended for small children. Your teen may or may not enjoy this program so plan your tours accordingly.

The plantations along Rt. 5 are a great way to spend your open day. But Sherwood Forrest is not open to the public any longer - just the grounds. Shirley and Berkeley are the only ones still open for house tours.

Speaking of toy stores: The Toymaker on Merchant%26#39;s Square is a delight for all ages. Stop in to see unique toys and games and one-of-a kind specialty items. Mary mentioned the candy store on Rt.60 W. It is no longer part of the Wythe candy shops but an independent store that still has all the same delicious sweets plus many discounted gourmet and snack items.

Not sure if I overlooked it, but I would recommend going to President%26#39;s Park. It is up for sale, but I think it is still open. It features large bust of all the Presidents except the current President. It has a lot of interesting facts like, which President got a speeding ticket while riding a horse to Washington DC or which President only had a 3rd grade education, yet became the President of the United States??? Your family would enjoy it. I will warn you that it is not as well upkept as it once was, but the facility is about 4 years old and if you can look past some of the damage on the bust, you would really enjoy it!!

Thank you all so much! I am just loving all the help an its getting me so excited! :D I love the advice that Williamsburg will deliver no matter what(along the lines of that), because thats so true. Its hard to not miss anything at all, so I should just remember that I know I%26#39;ll love it regardless! Thanks for the tips about the founding fathers! I REALLY don%26#39;t want to miss them this time!

So many helpful tips! I%26#39;m going to try to incorporate as much as I can! I think we%26#39;ll definitely see the plantations...unless we can%26#39;t bear to leave Williamsburg! haha

I agree with the above posters, great ideas all! I%26#39;d add a Crystal Concert, with Dean Shostak. The glass armonica music is heavenly, and the other glass instruments he plays and talks about are just as interesting. Love the Crystal Concerts!

This thread is great! We%26#39;re going to Williamsburg next week and I%26#39;ve added quite a few things to my list.

In Town June 20-21 any tips?

Hi we are travelling to Va Beach June 20-21 and are planning to go to the aquarium. Are the renovations done and all of it open yet? Also we are in our late 30%26#39;s and are looking for a nice place to stay cheap for probably only one night. Any good places nearby to stay within a few minutes driving distance that are cheap and clean? Finally what is the best route to drive to there from the Lynchburg VA area? Thanks to all for your help.

In Town June 20-21 any tips?

Almost any of the hotels along the Boardwalk would be considered ';a few minutes'; from the aquarium. You might try the Sandcastle -- it%26#39;s reasonably priced. Capes Resort and Ocean Suites advertise rates all over the board, but you could call for a firm rate.

When we go your way, we always take 460, but if you%26#39;re really coming from Danville, 58 is good too. If you choose 460, start watching the signs to VB when you get to Suffolk.

In Town June 20-21 any tips?

If you are going 58 watch your speed in Emporia and slow down even before you hit town. Some signs are hidden and they will ticket anyone even 5 miles over the limit it looks like.

Cool, but when I said ';nearby';, I actually meant nearby to the beach itself. Because I know places away from the beach should be cheaper. We can drive up to the beach the day we want to go there, but dont want to drive all the way back home that night. Looking for something cheap, clean, inexpensive, and quiet so I can get some sleep. Also thanks for the tip about the police in Emporia. I have to admit that, especially on long trips, my foot tends to get heavy sometimes. Also since I am thinking about it right now, how about a good low priced, preferably ';locals eat there'; type seafood place?

VADude3, The good news on Emporia is that the city has raised the speed limit through there, so driving is not nearly as ';scary'; as it used to be.

But back to the hotels, you might also consider Knight%26#39;s Inn on 29th St (not oceanfront - running around $165 depending on number in your group), Econo-Lodge-on-the-Ocean (it gets better reviews than Econo Lodge Oceanfront), and Cutty Sark. Cutty Sark is the least expensive of the ones I suggested - mom %26amp; pop hotel.

What about something about twenty or thirty minutes away? Perhaps in a nearby town? Trying to get down to at least $100.00, or lower if possible. Like I said, I do not mind driving a little ways.

The renovations to the aquarium are not quite complete, probably by the end of June so you may be in luck. The building is still open, though and you will still see most of the fish.

Right off 264 here in Chesapeake is a Holiday Inn Express that is in that price range. It would be easy to get to coming from the beach and very easy to hop onto 460/58. Also in this same vicinity is a Candlewood Suites. These are both part of the Holiday Inn chain (IC Hotels Group). CS is newer and less expensive.

    Public beaches in Va Beach?

My husband found out a few days ago that he will be at Langley for approximately 4 weeks in July and has requested an extended stay-type accommodation so that my two children(ages 5 %26amp; 7) and I can accompany him.

My plan was to hang out with my kids on the beach every day. However, now that I look at the map, I see that

    A. VA Beach is not really that close to Langley and

    B. I don%26#39;t see any public access beaches :(

Any suggestions as to where I can take my kids during the day while hubs is working? Thanks!

    Public beaches in Va Beach?

I will let others do the majority of the replying, but there is PLENTY of public beach access in VA Beach, so don%26#39;t worry.

The rest will tell you exactly where. I haven%26#39;t been there in 6+ years, and we were staying in a hotel, so it wasn%26#39;t a concern.

    Public beaches in Va Beach?

At least along the 3 miles of boardwalk, all of VA beach is public access, to my knowledge. You may not want to go over there every day, but while you are in the area you should definitely check it out. You will probably have to pay to park, however.

    http://www.vbfun.com/visitors/beaches.aspx

If you wait until after rush hour, you should be able to drive over to VA beach in about 45 minutes.

If you want to go somewhere that%26#39;s closer to Langley, you can go to Buckroe Beach, which is in Hampton, on the Chesapeake Bay, or Yorktown, on the York River. Not nearly as nice as the ocean beaches, and without the nice facilities and boardwalk, but handy.

As for other things to do, your children may be old enough to appreciate Jamestown Settlement, which is not far away.

    http://www.historyisfun.org/

If the weather isn%26#39;t nice, maybe you can check for programs at the local public library:

    hamptonpubliclibrary.org/allages/children_pr…

OK, so I just figured out that the whole Boardwalk area is public and the hotels are located on another part of the beach. Sorry. Duh. This is a long beach, apparently!

The North end of the beach is also public streets 45th-82nd or so.

Just adhere to the parking signs by people%26#39;s homes. It is a far less crowded beach, but there are no lifeguards.

Thanks for the replies. Buckroe Beach sounds great! My kids are too little to care if its a fancy beach or not! I%26#39;m thinking 45 min in the car with my 5-year-old might be OK once or twice :0 and after that, I%26#39;ll stick to the closer spots. Actually, my 5-year-old is fascinated with the idea of the tunnel and can%26#39;t wait to drive through it. He%26#39;s also very excited about driving the Chesapeake Bay bridge, so maybe we%26#39;ll spend some time in Cape Charles as well.

Thanks, Lynn. We don%26#39;t need lifeguards, really. My kids are deathly afraid of sharks and whales and won%26#39;t go in more than ankle deep. They just want to dig in the sand. Those less crowded beaches are probably perfect for us.

Another beach with public access is just across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel in Norfolk at Ocean View. If you are interested, there is free parking and it%26#39;s 20 minutes from Langley (unless traffic problems which are frequent during the summer...also avoid rush hours and Fridays). From the HRBT take the 4th View exit, turn left off the exit, turn right onto Ocean View Ave (the Fishing Pier is in front of you, this might be a nice spot to visit one day also), bear right and proceed up and over the overpass, continue on Ocean View Ave about 1/2 mi and you%26#39;ll see parking lot on left for the beach and a strip shopping area on right. If this lot is full continue about 1-2 miles on OV Ave to next parking area (free also). The Ocean View beaches are on the Chesapeake Bay. At the spot of the first parking area is a grandstand where free concerts are performed on Fridays during the summer, see website for details, festeventsva.org/ocean-view/….

Also, there are several cool spots in Newport News that you and the kids may enjoy....Mariners Museum is great and there is a free 5 mile trail around Lake Maury (Noland Trail) on the property, wonderful adventure hike...can%26#39;t miss the signs, easy, free parking. There are also rowboat, paddleboat, etc rentals onsite. Va Living Museum quite interesting too especially for your kids ages. Hope this helps.

    Happy trails

Hi, Karen...use your google satellite or birdseye and you%26#39;ll see the Virginia Beach boardwalk is sort of the backyard for the oceanfront hotels. The front of those hotels is the main drag, Atlantic Ave. and there are hotels across the street and several other streets.

Virginia Beach is a city with lots of economic undergirding including the beachside. Unlike many beach areas where the beach is the main thing.

It%26#39;s very child friendly since as you say your little ones are looking forward to the tunnel:)

I second Ocean View on the VB side (still peaceful bay water, not ocean waves) and Buckroe, probably the closest to where you%26#39;ll be staying.

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll quickly meet people more than happy to exchange further info and ideas on the area as soon as you get there.

I understand Buckroe can get crowded in the afternoon and the morning is the better time for some. There are paddle boats, pavillion, picnic area, etc. The water will be nice for little ones. Do remember that high spf. Our group, including little ones, always enjoy binoculars too to see what%26#39;s out on the water.

Here%26#39;s pix to get you and your family excited about it: visithampton.com/go/…revive-at-the-beach There%26#39;s also free family movies Tuesday nights there in the summer.

Here is a list of Hampton%26#39;s Parks and REcreation waterfront parks and what they call the feature parks:

    hampton.gov/PARKS/waterfront_and_feature_par…

Airpower Park might be fun for your adventurous little boy too.

Carousel Park has a 1920 wooden carousel with 48 horses.

This place is really great for families...walking in nature, discovery, etc...it%26#39;s part of the parks system on that list:

Here%26#39;s another beach idea. [I like pictures. I even order off menus by the picture. I guess that tells the high end places we frequent:)] So here are pix to tell you about it. There%26#39;s a nature trail to a beach ... I think 2 1/2 miles long ... and it%26#39;s all a nature preserve. Again, it%26#39;s part of the parks system:

ps...in re-reading (when I already posted, of course) so as not to confuse, Ocean View is in Nofolk. I was thinking of one side of the bay vs the other when I described it.

ALL beaches in Virginia Beach are public with the exception of the ones on the military bases.

Don%26#39;t ever let anyone tell you that you can%26#39;t be on the beach, whether it is along the bay or the oceanfront. The city has spent millions in preserving the public%26#39;s right to the beach.

    The only restriction is parking!
