Most of the campgrounds I am familiar with are in State Parks. The sites are generally fairly close to other campers, but many offer fishing and sunning opportunities. Check the Va State Parks website to see if something interests you, www.dcr.virginia.gov. First Landing in Va Beach is nice, good campsites and right on the Chesapeake Bay. Chippokes in Surry is on the James River and there are lots more, especially if you don%26#39;t mind sunning without a beach...lots of Parks with lakes. Hope this helps and let us know where you decide to go...the rest of us may need a place to go a ';lil cazy'; too!

Happy trails

When I was a kid, we used to go to Janes Island State Park. It is over on the Eastern Shore of MD. Depending on where in VA you are coming from, it may or may not be within your drive time.

The camp ground was always very nice. Nestled in pines. There is a marina and there was a boat that would take you over to the actual island where there is a dock and then you go across to the beach.

If you have a canoe or kyak or can rent or borrow one from a friend, take it. It would be ideal.

Smith Mountain Lake -- beautiful campsites and excellent beach. We were on the lake all last week and fish were jumping! Fishing was great. See my Go List (I need to update it, but here goes):
