dolphin kayak tour

I%26#39;m between Chesapean Outdoors and Kayak Nature Tours. Has anyone done either or both? Really want a great experience. Thanks.

dolphin kayak tour

I don%26#39;t have personal experience with either company you mentioned but am familiar with Wild River Outfitters (good company). I briefly looked at the Chesapean and Kayak Nature websites, both look like they have been around for several years. Kayak Nature has a youtube on the dolphin tour (I didn%26#39;t look at it) and explain the tour quite well in their text description saying to expect 3-4%26#39; waves and wind. Sorry I can%26#39;t be of more help but enjoy paddling with the dolphin, it%26#39;s a great experience.

Virginia Aquarium

We are planning to visit Va Beach late in July. Last year during our visit we took a side trip to BG, but this year we%26#39;d like to see more of what the VA beach area has to offer, especially the aquarium. I see that it is currently under construction - is it still worth a visit? Also, which is better - Rudee Flipper or Rocket? I will be taking my 8 y/o daughter (hubby does not like any type of boat!)and she has never been on a boat (except 1/2 cruise off Navy Pier). I love going out on a boat and have done so many times in Lake Erie (not the ocean, I know). Does the ';rocket'; really zip along? Can you see anything? Any information would be helpful as we try to work this all out. Thanks so much!!!

Virginia Aquarium

The Rudee Rocket is similar to the Mad Dog (or something Dog) that runs at Navy Pier Chicago. The Rocket is a fast, loud, boat and goes from Rudee Inlet to the North End of the beach. The Flipper is a dolphin cruise with discussions by a Va Aquarium guide about local marine life. Very different boat rides, just depends which type you would enjoy. If sailing interests you consider the Iggy Biggy, I haven%26#39;t sailed her but have taken several trips on the American Rover sailboat in Norfolk, cutting quietly through the waves is a nice experience. More details on boat cruises at www.vbfun.com/visitors/categoryDetails.aspx…

I haven%26#39;t been to the Aquarium lately so I can%26#39;t speak to the construction situation.

Enjoy your visit.

reservations at Shenandoah National Park

I was a bit put off by some previous posts regarding lack of cleanliness and bad meals at the lodging, but others have said they%26#39;re okay. I%26#39;m trying to get on a wait list for one of the lodges for later this summer - but all I can find is the main private number for the lodges, which takes a 10% commission! Anyone know if there%26#39;s another way to contact them without paying that commission? Thanks!

reservations at Shenandoah National Park

Reservations for the lodges, Skyland and Big Meadows, are handled by Aramark. The number for phone reservations is 888-896-3833 or you can check online at visitshenandoah.com/lodging-food/index.cfm. Don%26#39;t know what 10% you refer to unless it%26#39;s Aramark%26#39;s profit margin or other travel service trying to make a buck by handling your reservation. The lodges are comparable to most lodging in other National Parks, usually clean %26amp; comfortable but not 5 star. If nothing opens in SNP, consider Front Royal, Luray, or Charlottesville. Good luck, and by the way....love the name of your town!

reservations at Shenandoah National Park

Thanks so much - this is very helpful. The 10% was for the number given on the website and I couldn%26#39;t find another one, for some reason. By the way, in addition to living in Normal, I%26#39;m a psychologist!!! Normal actually refers to a teaching university - ISU, a large state university is here, which is what leads me to be here, which I certainly would never have been otherwise!

worldapart,

You must admit, you have a great ice breaker story....

Enjoy Shenandoah NP and if you are interested in hiking, post again we%26#39;ll be happy share some favorite trails.

Happy trails

It certainly is a good icebreaker - I end up talking with reservations people about it sometimes, when they take my address and notice it... I%26#39;d love to have some info on your favorite trails! Thanks!

Here are a few trails to consider depending on your interests, available time, abilities, etc.

Dark Hollow Falls, milepost 50.5 near Byrd Visitor Center, one of most popular trails in SNP (not a favorite of mine due to crowds but a very nice hike to beautiful waterfall), moderate, 1.4 mi roundtrip.

Rose River Loop, I prefer this to Dark Holllow, 4 mi, milepost 49.4, moderate, interesting trail with 800%26#39; elevation change, lots of water views.

Whiteoak Canyon milepost 42.6, 4.5 mi roundtrip, moderate, waterfall, popular trail

Little Stony Man, 1 mi roundtrip to summit, lots of view for very little hiking but steep, milepost 39, moderate.

Others to consider include Hawksbill (great views), Bearfence (cool rock scramble), Blackrock Summit (beautiful views for very little effort), Frazier Discovery Trail (pleasant, interesting, scenic)

You may get some other trail suggestions from area hikers, you really can%26#39;t go wrong it%26#39;s a great park. Stop in one of the Visitor Centers and discuss your interests with a ranger, they will point you in the right direction and provide trail maps.

Happy trails

Hey, thanks a lot! Maybe I%26#39;ll get back to you and let you know how a Normal woman does. Laurie

Thanks for the smile. The only way I could refer to myself as a Normal woman would be if I lived there....even then I think my nose would grow!

Enjoy Shenandoah.

Public transportation to Chincoteaque to delaware beaches?

I will be staying in Rehoboth Beach this summer. However,I would like to take a couple days and go to Chincoteaque...but I do not really like to drive in ';beach traffic';.

I have seen Carolina Trails buses mentioned as having a route in the area but can%26#39;t find much about it online.

Anyone have any info on this? I%26#39;d really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Trip Report

My husband and I were in Williamsburg from June 6th to June 14th, 2009.

We arrived at the Williamsburg Lodge a little before 2:30 PM after an 8 hour drive. We knew it was early for check-in; and, our room was not ready. So, we went to the ticket office to get our complimentary hotel guest passes(minimum 4 night stay required).

What a pleasure it was to see Judy still worked there. She could not do enough to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. We looked through ';This Week'; to see programs offered that we wanted to see and got tickets for them right away.

One program was ';Duties of the President%26#39;s Wife'; about Martha Washington. At the end of the program, the interpretor returned to the stage as herself in the present time answering questions from the audience.

The next program we saw was ';America%26#39;s Music--the Influence of Scottish Fiddle Music';. John Turner was exceptional in his knowledge of and performance on several different instruments.

Even though we have seen most of Thomas Jefferson%26#39;s programs during prior visits, we always catch one or two because the interpretation is always a bit different. The one titled ';A Conversation with President Jefferson'; was excellent, as usual.

We arrived early for ';Daughters of Liberty'; at the Raleigh Tavern. Space is limited; and many people were turned away. The program was described as how women contributed to the fight for independence using words and wit.

Some of our time was spent doing that all important past time of shopping. But, we often took books to Merchant%26#39;s Square or the Historic Area, found a shady bench, relaxed and read or people watched.

Weather was mainly hot, humid with rain a couple days for brief perios. Thunderstorms and lightening sent people scrambling for cover.

As a treat to ourselves, we went to the outside terrace of the Williamsburg Inn a couple times for an after dinner drink. The setting is beautiful--large trees, lovely landscaping overlooking part of the golf course, and bunnies, squirrels and ducks. My husband spotted a rare site--a beautiful pale green luna moth on one of the Inn%26#39;s windows.

When time permits, I will do specific reviews of The Lodge, Emerald Thai, Fat Canary, Chez Trinh, Dudley%26#39;s Farmhouse Grille, The Cheese Shop, Charles City Tavern, The Blue Heron and Aromas.

I%26#39;ll review Five Fork%26#39;s Cafe now--it is a relaxing, casual place that had both locals and visitors. I had the turkey dinner which consisted of 3 rather large slices of turkey breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce and I chose a side of cole slaw. My husband had the liver and onions, potatoes and slaw. Service was friendly and not as rushed as I had expected it to be; and we both enjoyed our dinners. With a couple glasses of ice tea the bill was about $25.

Great report! I am looking forward to your reviews.

I love a good turkey dinner too!

Public transportation to Chincoteaque?

I will be staying in Rehoboth Beach,DE this summer but would really like to take a couple days and go to Chincoteaque...but really do not want to drive in ';beach traffic'; to get there.

Is there any bus that would get me between the 2 places?

Thanks!

Public transportation to Chincoteaque?

Depending on what time of day/week you go, the beach traffic doesn%26#39;t have to be awful. Friday nights are horrendous. Sunday afternoons are horrendous. Monday mornings are not so bad.

I don%26#39;t think that there%26#39;s any bus service you can use. Among other things, there are three states involved on the route you%26#39;ve proposed. A regional bus service serving the peninsula would involve a degree of cooperation and funding that just doesn%26#39;t exist out there. I think Trailways serves the peninsula, but you%26#39;d probably have to go back through Baltimore or Washington to do so.

Public transportation to Chincoteaque?

I agree with the previous poster - not only is there no bus service that I know of, but the drive from Rehoboth to Chincoteague is not that bad - especially during the week. I%26#39;d vote for giving it a shot!

  • USA & Alexandria Birthday Celebration on July 11

We will be arriving on this day and are considering going to this event. Can someone tell me more about it? It is at Oronoco Bay Park. We will be staying at Embassy Suites. Can we take the trolly and walk the rest of the way or is best to drive? I am a little concerned about a big mass of crowds trying to get on the trolly at the end of the fireworks. How is the parking?

It also says that there is food. I assume that they will have food trailers where we can purchase your typical carnival foods.

It also says that there is an orchestra concert at 6:00. How long does the concert normally last? What are the sitting options? We aren%26#39;t planning to back chairs on our long road trip.

Any other information would be helpful.

    Thanks!

USA %26amp; Alexandria Birthday Celebration on July 11

This is my favorite festival here in Alexandria which reminds me of living in some small town in the middle of the country. So glad you are coming to experience it with us.

The Embassy Suites is about a mile walk to the waterfront, and the entrance to Oronoco Bay Park will be on Union Street around the 400 block. Highly suggest bringing lawn chairs...or at least stopping by CVS for a plastic table cloth to sit on as our rainy season can leave the park rather damp.

Parking is simply not available, and the trolley runs until 10pm (according to the info I could find), and probably wouldn%26#39;t permit its usage given the crowd and timing of the fireworks which would be concluding at the time. Unless you are traveling with tots...which nearly everyone attending will do...I%26#39;d grab a cheap cab back to the hotel if it is truly a burden...otherwise...just ';wing it'; and enjoy our festival.

Food are typical concessions stands and a few local restaurants selling their chili and other treats.

    Hope this helps.

    Does it ever stop raining?

I plan to visit Virginia Beach for the second time since April of the previous year and last time I came, staying at an unpleasent hotel just didn%26#39;t seem to top off the cake to a most dredful vaction.

Last year I drove 5 hours to this city for one night to find that it was raining for sun up until sun down and the next day as well. Now, looking at the forecast for June 19th - 23 I see nothing but clouds, rain, storms, and a miserable time at a place meant for fun in the SUN. I have noticed that they%26#39;re are a few times out of the month that weather.com does say that in the past it has actually been sunny, but if I%26#39;m going to be camping oceanfront in a tent that came from Wal*Mart and hasn%26#39;t exactly been ';weather'; tested, I don%26#39;t want an unpleasent surprise when I wake up in the morning to find that it has rained so much that me, my mother, our tent, and everything in it is floating out to sea.

    Does it ever stop raining?

I think the daily forecast for most of the summer here in Virginia is for a chance of thunderstorms - that%26#39;s normal. But the beach weather changes quickly - from rain to sun in a short time. Hope you have a great time and don%26#39;t get washed out!

    Does it ever stop raining?

Yes, now that the drought of the last...what...5 years...in Va. seems to be dissipating, it may be weather as it used to be. And, actually, as it has often been at the shore. Nice afternoon shower every now and then. Comes with heat and humidity.

I really don%26#39;t know how to respond about compliants of the weather. There is nothing anyone can do about it-it is what it is and it is not this cities fault.

There are plenty of activities to do indoors. I would prepare for rain as it probably will occur at some point, hopefully not all day or enough to ruin plans. I would also look into a ';weather tested'; tent if you are camping. Follow the BoyScout motto and be prepared.

Todd, while we are personally there enough to be interested in Va. Beach Blvd and all the malls and stores, etc. and everything away from the beach, most tourists here will be more interested in the beach part of Virginia Beach. We have always enjoyed it...bot the actual resort areas as well as the rest of the city.

    Hi erintucker,

The weather %26#39;forecast%26#39; is generally only correct within about 24-48 hours out. The weather here changes so very much in the blink-of-an-eye. The reason the forecast shows a chance of rain almost each day is because they don%26#39;t know when something will actually pop up or not, but there is always a %26#39;chance%26#39;. If you notice, the percentage of a chance of precipitation is very low, which will be because they know that there is always a CHANCE that a quick shower or storm may pop up- the higher percentages are usually due to an actual active storm system heading our way. Right now during your stay, the forecast is showing very low percentages for the chance of any precipitation, they highest being only 40% chance of %26#39;scattered%26#39; storms, which means that if anything shows up at all, it will likely be short %26#39;popup%26#39; storms, that are here for 15 minutes %26amp; then gone. My bet, based on the typical weather trend here, is that most of your vacation will be clear.

    food into BG?

I%26#39;ve read that coolers cannot be brought into BG? We have 2 small kids. Will small snacks like cheese sticks, yogurt tubes, pretzels, goldfish, etc. be a problem?

    food into BG?

I was at BG a couple months ago and I had no problem bringing in snacks and bottled water in a backpack.

    food into BG?

They don%26#39;t allow actual coolers, but if you pack a few snacks in a backpack, you will have no problem at all. The type of snacks you mentioned should provide no problem at all, that%26#39;s the type of snacks we pack when we go too %26amp; we%26#39;ve never had a problem. Some people actually bring in full sandwiches, etc with no problem at all.

Is it too cold to swim right now?

    Hi everyone,

we are planning to go to Virginia Beach next week, but I%26#39;m concerned that it is still too cold to swim in the ocean? What do you guys think? For locals- do you swim already? Or if someone just came back- was the water too cold or is it ok?

    Thanks so much@

Is it too cold to swim right now?

As a local adult, I think it is still a little chilly, but swimmable. Ask my 16 year old, who will be going surfing this AM, the water is just great!

The water temp today is 66 degrees. Feels better once you get in and get used to it.

Is it too cold to swim right now?

I think it%26#39;s a bit chilly for swimming myself, but I still enjoy taking a dip, %26amp; then getting out %26amp; warming myself on a nice beach towel until I get hot, %26amp; then taking another dip, and so on. =) As long as it%26#39;s a warm day outside, after some initial %26#39;chilliness%26#39;, it%26#39;s really no big deal.

    ';Quick Queue'; worth it?

I%26#39;ve been reading how crowded BG is. We%26#39;re going to Williamsburg 6/24-7/3.Is the Quick Queue pass worth it? We love using the FastPass at Disneyworld and the quick pass at UNiversal, but this one seems more expensive.

    ';Quick Queue'; worth it?

This past week at BG, I didn%26#39;t see anyone using the Quick Queue line.

    ';Quick Queue'; worth it?

If you go during a weekday, the lines are not bad at all- the quick queue pass would probably be a waste. However, I noticed that your dates cover the Friday of July 4 weekend- if you opt for a quick queue pass on any of the days, that would be the one- the July 4th weekend crowds can be stifling.

hotel near mt. vernon recreation center

I am unfamiliar with the Alexandria area and I am looking for a hotel with easy access to the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center for an early July stay. I have been encouraged to stay away from the beltway. Is staying away from the beltway even an option?

    Any advice is really appreciated!

hotel near mt. vernon recreation center

The area within the mailing address of greater Alexandria covers a very large territory, with heavy congested traffic within that large area. I am familiar with the Mount Vernon Rec. Center - I took my kids skating there. It%26#39;s located a couple miles south of the Beltway (outside the Alexandria city limits). You will definitely need a hotel in the Richmond Highway corridor (Richmond Highway is another name for U.S. Route 1 just south of Alexandria) - but don%26#39;t stay too far south (not as far as the 8000 block). A search on http://www.fxva.com/sleepeatshop/hotels shows the following hotels are on Richmond Highway all within 2 -3 miles of the Rec. Center:

Quality Inn, Richmond Hwy (866) 969-8065

    Hampton Inn, 5821 Richmond Hwy (800) 426-7866

    Quality Inn, 7212 Richmond Hwy (800) 433-2546

Red Roof Inn, 5975 Richmond Hwy (800) 733-7663

I also tried a search on ';yahoo yellow pages'; for hotels closest to the Rec. Center%26#39;s address, but yahoo%26#39;s data seems very faulty. It omitted some hotels that are on Richmond Highway, but included some others that are much further north.

hotel near mt. vernon recreation center

Also I forgot to mention, the Days Inn, at 6100 Richmond Highway (877) 477-5817.

Thank you so much for your help. Are these hotels in a safe neighborhood? A friend of a friend suggested the Old Town area as the only safe area some what near the Rec center. Do you agree?

    Again thanks for the info!

Ok...so I know this area intimately. The rec center is off the main business thoroughfare of Rt. 1. and is close enough to old town, that, pending your budget...would make for a more memorable visit. One fact...the Mt. Vernon Rec Center is in the ';Belle Haven/Belle View area of Fairfax County...just off of Ft. Hunt Road about a mile from the Rt. 1 intersection which adjoins the exit from Interstate 495 south.

The Red Roof Inn is just off the highway at the Ft. Hunt Rd/Rt. 1 intersection. It is well lit and typical as far as RRI%26#39;s go. For $79/night in the DC area...not sure what folks are expecting from RRI, QI, or DI hotels.

As Mist so kindly noted for you above, there are a host of the budget hotels that line Rt 1..which are surrounded by mom %26amp; pop hotels that tend to attract police activity....so I mention for your information. You can google map the addresses and check the surrounding area via ';Street View';.

I highly recommend the Hampton Inn which is removed from the locals and is safe if even on Rt. 1 and the beltway. TA gives it good ratings. Otherwise, check out hotels available in Old Town Historic District focusing on zip code 22314 for a much better experience that allows you to walk, eat and explore our historic town. I always recommend the Residence Inn on Duke Street as they provide bfast/snacks/dinner and is safe and located within the historic district. Center on area near 1800 block of King Street, Alexandria.

Write back and let us know if you need more help.

Thank you Marylandmist and bbbyers for all your advise and information!! Much appreciated!!!!

    Historic Triangle Shuttle Service

I was reading about this today, and thought I would share.

The Historic Triangle Shuttle Service that connects Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown will begin service for the 2009 season on March 16, and continue through Nov. 1. The two Parkway routes, one from the Colonial Williamsburg Visitors Center to Jamestown, and the other from the VC to Yorktown, are scheduled to depart every half hour beginning at 9 a.m.

Once at Jamestown, visitors can use a shuttle around Jamestown that will stop at Historic Jamestowne, including the glasshouse, and Jamestown Settlement. At Yorktown, the Yorktown trolley provides transportation from Yorktown Battlefield and Yorktown Victory Center, with stops in between, including in the Riverwalk Landing area.

For additional information, check online at http://www.nps.gov/colo/

    Historic Triangle Shuttle Service

Thank you Zoey, I%26#39;m glad to hear about that. Might have to use it, especially the trolley in Yorktown.

    Historic Triangle Shuttle Service

If you get a chance to go to the Yorktown Battlefield, (the National Park Service part), I highly recommend the guided battlefield tour. I took a 1 hour walking tour, given by one of the park rangers, a few weeks ago, and it was extremely interesting and really brought the battle and the various players to life in a way that I had never experienced before. It was much more informative than the self-drive auto tour. Before you go on any tour, watch the film that%26#39;s available in the visitor%26#39;s center there.

This shuttle is a great service, which is not used nearly as extensively as it should be. It%26#39;s very convenient because the busses pick up and drop at the entrances to each venue, so there%26#39;s no need to hunt for parking. Since it travels down the Colonial Parkway, it gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy the sheer beauty of that wonderful drive.

So take advantage of the shuttle service as you make your way about the historic triangle!

Thanks for the information! I went to the website you posted but couldn%26#39;t find any info there. Is there another site that would have the schedule and map, etc?

    Thanks!

This has some info on it: nps.gov/colo/parknews/historic-triangle-shut…

Just wanted to add that this upcoming weekend, June 20 and 21, the National Park service is waiving admissions to all parks nationwide, which include our local Historic Jamestowne nad Yorktown Battlefield, to encourage Americans to visit their national parks. There will be two other weekends throughout the year.

    Wonderful! Thanks!

Bushel of Crabs in VA Beach

I%26#39;m going to be in Virginia Beach this weekend. Anyone know where I can purchase a bushel of crabs. I%26#39;ve read that Virginia Beach Seafood Company Market %26amp; Southend Pub was a good place. Has anyone been there or can tell me where I can buy a bushel of crabs.

Bushel of Crabs in VA Beach

I%26#39;m not sure what it was called but on our way to Sandbridge we came across a little place that looked to sell fresh sea food, like to cook at your home or condo and they had a sign about a bushel of crabs. I';m sure the experts from there will know more details....Wendy...Explorer...?. You turn off General Booth towards Sandbridge area but can%26#39;t remember exactly where! Hope this helped somewhat?

Bushel of Crabs in VA Beach

Usually you can find folks on the roadside selling crabs - the aquatic version of truck farmers.

When I was in Sandbridge last month I bought fresh fish at Bonnie %26#39;s Seafod Market - corner of Princess Anne Road %26amp; Sandbridge Road, 426-3171 (don%26#39;t know the area code for VA Beach). They had crabs there.

Also, Coastal Market and Deli - 312 Sandbridge Road, 689-3686 sold fresh seafood and they take orders. They are right as you enter Sandbridge Beach area.

    Good luck.

Best place to buy crabs in va beach is at the shellfish company, 3323 shore drive, phone number is 757-481-7512

Wow Thankds for the quick responses. By any chance are there any others, that possibly go on Fri.? She wants to go while we%26#39;re at the waterpark. Thanks again

Sorry, those are the only ones I%26#39;m aware of. If you%26#39;re staying in a hotel, you might contact the front desk or concierge and ask if they know of any others, though. Or if you%26#39;re a AAA member, you could contact them and ask.

Good Morning, I wanted to apologize that we didn%26#39;t have anything available to take your family from Williamsburg to Washington, D.C. for a city tour the week you were looking at. We do offer tours to Washington, D.C. each Thursday. An alternative to taking our bus tour to Washington, D.C., would be to take our private tour which is where we give you an Oleta driver for the day and he takes you on the exact itinerary that we take our bus groups on. You may view this itinerary at http://www.oleta.com. The cost for the day would be $175 and you can have as many people you would like that can fit in your personal vehicle. This cost is just for the driver and does not include any meals, parking or tram rides at Arlington Cemetary. The benefit of this option is that the day can be customized to see the things you most want to see in DC.

We hope this helps and thanks again for considering Oleta for your touring needs! Have a blessed day %26amp; Happy Touring!

    Bumping this up...

Does anybody know about Tidewater Tours?

I am thinking that this is the one we took years ago.

We enjoyed it. A nice breakfast stop, and Supper at a decent Buffet restaurant were included.

Also, does anybody know if there is any access to the Capitol on these tours.

We actually had a mini-tour of a common area, like a large ornate lobby/rotunda.... But, all the tours now just list %26#39;photo stop%26#39;.

There is a Tidewater Tours out of Maryland, that comes here to Williamsburg on occasion, but I am not familiar with a local Company with that name. Maximum Guided Tours, as mentioned previously, conducts a tour to D.C. from Williamsburg, typically on Thursdays.

Tidewater Touring does operate in the Williamsburg area - it was started in 1990 by a retired Navy chief named Barry. My wife and I did a tour of DC with Tidewater Tours in 1994 when the company consisted mostly of Barry and a single bus which could carry about 15 or 16 passengers. The company%26#39;s web site is www.tidewatertouring.org

Wow. -- had never heard of or seen them here in Williamsburg. Thanks for the correction, Rod.

Williamsburg, VA - in the rain

We are planning a trip to Williamsburg for 5 days with our kids, ages 4,8. Having reviewed the forecast, the outlook is bleak that we will have dry days. Is it still worth the trip?

Williamsburg, VA - in the rain

Williamsburg weather has one thing in common with most of the world - forcasts change the closer to the day/time. We%26#39;re not any different than most of the country, our weather is not unique - we%26#39;re not in a bubble.

You know this - wherever you live the prediction at 8 am can change by noon - not always of course.

I%26#39;m guessing you are talking about the next week. Rain in the forcast. Who knows how much and when, most likely it will rain some. It has rained the last 2-3 nights. 40-60% of scattered thunderstorms.

You know your kids and how you family would handle the rain.

That said, with kids and the type of activities in our area, if I could rearrange plans, I would. 40% chance is too much for me since I love the outdoors and touring the gardens, Jamestown Island and Busch Gardens. I have the luxury of flexibility. Do you? This is a personal decision - some would not change, head to Willliamsburg and take a chance - a great plan for some. What works for you?

Remeber, 40-50% chance of rain means 50-50% chance of no rain!! Do you feel lucky?

Williamsburg, VA - in the rain

    Thanks for your reply.

Any sugesstions on what to do on rainy days or if it rains on and off any type of game plan.

Any suggestions on what to do on rainy days?

I wouldn%26#39;t let a mere chance of rain stop me from visiting the premier living history museum in the world. After all, weather was a fact of life in the 18th century, too!

You will be able to do everything in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown that you would do if it were sunny outside. All the sites will still be open...throw in rain slickers for everyone and tour the sites.

There are activities suited for inside. The Museums are inside the old Publick Hospital, and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, inside the Publick Hospital, has some exhibits geared towards children. Down on the Farm is delightful! There are also audio tours available which can be quite interesting.

If your hotel has an indoor pool, that can be fun for the kids. But most of the activities go on, rain or shine; only thunder/lightning will cancel things. If you are prepared with ponchos or umbrellas, you will get along and have a good time!

We just got back from Williamsburg, the forecast called for scattered/isolated showers every day. We had two half hour showers during the day and some overnight showers, other than that just very humid. We had a great week, so I wouldn%26#39;t worry about the forecast too much.

Thanks everyone. We%26#39;re going to go for it!

Has anyone ever done the aquairium in VA beach on a rainy Williamsburg day? Do you hit a lot of traffic trying to get out of the rain? Is it a good back-up option?

When we visited Williamsburg on Easter several years ago, it SNOWED. Really! We went to the Living Museum for the morning...the kids loved it, and by the time we returned to Williamsburg after lunch, the weather was lovely. It%26#39;s a great back-up plan.

If you're going to Busch Gardens, you should read this

If you%26#39;re going to Busch Gardens for the day, you need to check out the ';Busch Gardens Meal Deal';. If you go to the Busch Gardens website, under ';Begin Purchase';, and then ';Dining';. On the middle of the screen you will see Busch Gardens Meal Deal. Once you get to that screen, scroll down until you see Busch Gardens Meal Deal. The price is $20. It is good for 2 meals, 2 sides, and 4 drinks. I purchased 2 of these plans for our trip this past week. So total, I spent $40. During lunch one day, we went to Trapper%26#39;s smokehouse. My wife and kids got the combo meal (beef briskit, 2 ribs, and smoked chicken with waffle fries). They also picked out a dessert and a regular drink. (if you didn%26#39;t want a dessert, you could get a side, like corn, baked beans etc.) The combo was 13.49, drink 2.79 and dessert 3.29) Total price for meal was $19.57 before tax, and I paid $10. Later that day we went to Das Festhaus and I got a combo (German Sampler platter: 2 sausages and 1/2 rack of ribs with hashbrown casserole) It was really good. I thought it was better than Trapper%26#39;s. The sampler platter was $12.89, and I also got a drink and dessert. We also had 4 extra drink coupons which we used mainly for the lemonade slush (and cherry) that they sell throughout the park. This is such a great deal if you are going to eat at the park. If you%26#39;re in the mood for Italian, check out the restaurant in Italy, they also had combo meals that were around $13

If you're going to Busch Gardens, you should read this

Thank you for posting this! I just purchased four of these for our family of eight. I had seen this the other day but had not looked closely enough at it to see what a deal it really is. I notice they have you put a name on each ticket. I randomly chose four names in our family. I am assuming it is ok for two people to go through line and choose two separate meals and drinks with one coupon????

If you're going to Busch Gardens, you should read this

For each meal deal you buy ($20), you will be given 4 tickets. Two of those tickets will say something about the ';Meal Deal';, and the other 2 will be used for the ';bonus'; drinks. You can get a soft drink with the drink coupons, but we used ours for the lemonade slush. Cool and refreshing on a hot day.

That does sound like a great deal. Do you know if you must use all the tickets on the same day, or can we use them for 1 lunch and a beverage on 2 different days? Are they dated?

I had bought the 7 day bounce tickets, so mine were good for only one week from the time I redeemed my e-tickets at the park.

We also have the 7 day tickets. We%26#39;re planning on at least 2-3 days at Busch Gardens. Do you know if we%26#39;re able to buy the Meal Deal'; and use it for 2 different days within the 7 consecutive days?

Yes, you can definitely do that. Do a combo meal one day, and then when you go back you can try a different place to eat. Me and my wife shared the meal at Trapper%26#39;s Smokehouse, and we were both pretty full after the meal and the dessert (strawberries topped with whipped cream). If you go to Das Festhaus, make sure you go when they are having a show. It was pretty entertaining, and they get the whole crowd involved. They also have a show right beside of the Italy restaurant. We didn%26#39;t get to eat there, or watch the show. Oh, maybe next time.

Great tip! Thanks for the heads up.

Jon-Glad you had a great trip. Will do meal deal and save $ thanks to you!

This sounds great!. What does the kids ticket include? Does anyone know?

I have 2 adults and 3 kids 12, 9, 5. What do you think I should order for one day in the park?

badgermom3, the details of the offer are on the Busch Gardens website. Try this link: http://commerce.4adventure.com/EStore/Scripts/Skins/BGW/DiningBookNow.aspx?__utma=1.4388567756756310500.1236305588.1245033860.1245197492.13%26amp;__utmb=1.2.10.1245197492%26amp;__utmc=1%26amp;__utmx=-%26amp;__utmz=1.1238209483.4.2.utmcsr=facebook.com|utmccn=(referral)|utmcmd=referral|utmcct=/home.php%26amp;__utmv=-%26amp;__utmk=62563372 Mouse over the ';Things to Know Before You Go'; for details. Only you know how much your family can eat, but you can kind of tell from John14-6%26#39;s post an idea of what%26#39;s included, and the menus are posted on the BG website.

  • Promo Code for Busch Gardens Europe and 4 Site Combo Ticket

Does anyone know the Promo Code for Purchasing the Bounce Pass at Busch Gardens Europe or the Code for the 4 Site Combo Ticket? I am planning to purchase tickets and there is a Promo Code Box and would like to use it to get additional savings for our Big Family purchase. Thanks for your help!

    Busch Gardens July 4,5,6

So I%26#39;ll be in the area on these days. My plan was to spend the most of the July 5th in BG but now I%26#39;m not so sure this is a good idea.

From July 4,5,6 what would be the best day as far as crowds are concerned? I don%26#39;t know if I%26#39;ll be able to change my plans b/c of certain events that I will like to attend but I would appreciate the advice anyway.

    Busch Gardens July 4,5,6

If you can choose between those 3 days, I would definitely opt for July 6. Most of the holiday weekend crowd will have dissipated by then. July 4 is a complete mad-house there, I ALWAYS stay away from there on that day. July 5 is a toss-up- it will be better than the 4th for sure, but it will still probably be fairly crowded, as it is still officially part of the holiday weekend. You will miss their fireworks however =( , which they have each night July 1-4. But if you are in Colonial Williamsburg during that time, I%26#39;m sure you have plans to see those fireworks.

    Food

So this might be my last question. How much do you think a family of 3 will have to spend to eat in Williamsburg. Some of these reviews for taverns seem very expensive. I%26#39;m on a budget. So I%26#39;m planning on getting a room w/ a small fridge %26amp; microwave. We%26#39;ll be able to have breakfast %26amp; maybe lunch this way (cereal %26amp; a bunch of canned stuff-I%26#39;m normally a healthy eater which my son hates but I%26#39;m making the exception for our trip). I%26#39;m guessing there should be plenty of fast food places but I could be wrong.

We%26#39;ll probably eat out for dinner 1/2 nights but I don%26#39;t want to eat breakfast,lunch%26amp;dinner out times 3 people.

    Food

Well, there are definitely affordable options. The taverns are pricey but I would say that going there is something to do more for the experience than the meal.

There are plenty of chains that normally have a degree of affordability, if that%26#39;s your thing. There are also small shops and such where you can get sandwiches and the like.

If you want to seriously save money, I would definitely stay away from eating at any of the attractions. But don%26#39;t forget that can be something fun to do in its own right; your mileage may vary. IMO, the food at BG is definitely a good value considering what it can cost to eat at an amusement park, and how park dining can often be rather mediocre.

Here%26#39;s a site where you can start your research: visitwilliamsburg.com/restaurants-in-william…

There are also plenty of supermarkets in town, including a Trader Joe%26#39;s, which I find has at least moderately healthy and attractively priced ';microwave'; meals.

We do about 70% of our normal grocery shopping at the one near us, so I%26#39;m looking forward to staying in a condo (w/kitchen) more than I ever have before (we haven%26#39;t been there since before TJs opened, or at least we weren%26#39;t aware of it last time we were there %26lt;4 years ago). It will make feeding our 1.5 y-o daughter SO much easier, since most of the food she eats is from there as it is.

    Food

Great topic! I need this information as well. We are staying at the Governor%26#39;s Inn and need to eat on a budget. Can someone list restaurants that nearby? I have read about the Cheese Shop but other than that I don%26#39;t know if there is a Pizza Hut or a Panera Bread or McD%26#39;s, etc.

Trader Joe%26#39;s - Is this way better than a regular grocery store? What can I find there that is better/different?

    Thanks!

Places to eat within Merchants Square, adjacent to the Historic Area, include:

Aroma%26#39;s - soup, sandwiches, salads, breakfast, desserts. With tax, figure $7 and up.

Retros - hot dogs, hamburgers, freshly cut french fries, limeades, frozen custard. $3 to $4 for most items.

Lenny%26#39;s - sandwiches, salad, sushi, soup. $7 or so for a sandwich.

Seasons - American fare - steak, hamburgers, chicken tenders, salads. From around $8 and up.

Stephano%26#39;s - pizza, subs, salads. $7 and up.

The Cheese Shop - sandwiches, salads, dessert bars and cookies. Most sandwiches $6 or so.

Berrett%26#39;s Taphouse Grill - casual, nightly specials (a bucket of lobster, clams, corn, and cole slaw for $25)

    Berrett%26#39;s - fresh seafood, upscale.

The Trellis - seasonal lunch and dinner menus.

    Blue Talon Bistro - bistro ';comfort food.';

Fat Canary - dinner only, real foodie food.

The last four on the list are the priciest of the bunch, but they have menus posted outside, so you can decide before you go in.

A bit further afield, but easy driving distance, are lots of other places, both local and chains. Do a search on the forum, and check the restaurant listings on the side, and then ask if you need more information. Lots of the restaurants have websites, too.

Ah, Trader Joe%26#39;s... I can wax endlessly on the wonderfulness (sic) that is my favorite grocery store, but I%26#39;ll do my best to keep it concise.

It%26#39;s a great grocery store if you want to eat food with ingredients that you can pronounce but don%26#39;t want to break the bank. Also, if you like a varied diet and/or consider yourself a foodie, if you like organic, minimally processed, or ';wholesome';/';natural'; foods (quotes because those words can have different meanings to different people), it%26#39;s a good place to shop.

Most of their stuff is private label (ie, their own store brand) and very good. They have a good variety of organic food at very good prices, as well as commitment to non-GMO foods (not sure if it%26#39;s store-wide though). They also have a minimal amount of preservatives in their foods as well. Not everything is cheaper, but a lot of things are.

In my experience it%26#39;s not a very big grocery store, and you can%26#39;t get everything there. We still go to regular stores for paper and cleaning products (though TJs does have them), health and beauty items, etc, as well as sales we just can%26#39;t say no to, random stuff here and there, as well as a fair amount of meat and produce.

But for my family, most of our shopping is done there.

They have great prices on eggs, some fresh produce (notably berries, carrots, apples and avocados), frozen produce, cereal, bread, some cheeses, some pasta and sauces, spices, bread, vitamins, packaged lunch meat, cookies, and I don%26#39;t know, I can keep going, but I%26#39;ll stop here.

They also have some prepared foods, and as for microwave meals they have several options that are probably healthier than most of what can be found in a larger supermarket.

Okay, I know I%26#39;m biased but I am really a huge fan. You%26#39;re experience may be entirely different, but my family has come to trust them over the years. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask; I will do my best to answer.

Yes, I def agree... I love TraderJoe%26#39;s %26amp; if you can find 1 by you, you will love it too. Monster pretty much covered the description.

The 1 by me is small %26amp; I probably get about 25% of my food from there. Most of the stuff I buy are things like already marinated fish, chicken, %26amp; beef, canned goods...etc. I would say that cost isn%26#39;t that bad when you consider what similar products cost at reg groc stores or at Whole Foods.

And Thank you Zoey those suggestions seem to be what I%26#39;m looking for! We%26#39;ll see how it goes, I keep having this feeling that I%26#39;m not going to be able to stick to my food budget.

Tell us what your food budget is and we can steer you to places within that range.

We do have plenty of fast food, you know what those prices are.

Check the tourist magazines for coupons - they are evrywhere, some places offer a small % off. Our local paper is published Wed %26amp; Sat, spend .50 on The Virginia Gazette, check the ads and coupons.

I find the taverns expensive for the food - since I don%26#39;t think they are great. I know some like the ';experience';, if that%26#39;s what you want then it%26#39;s ';worth it'; to you. We think the food is mediocre. I%26#39;m not sure who - a recent visitor posted of the disappointment in the tavern - if you%26#39;re looking for opinions see if you can find that.

The grocery stores will of course have sandwich and picnic items if you can keep food at the proper temp all day. TJ%26#39;s is great - I go to Farm Fresh or Fresh Market for items not available at TJ%26#39;s.

There are a few buffets, whch people seem to like for quantity, that are about $7 for lunch - Golden Corral, Wasabi (chinese), Peking (another chinese), Pancho Villa (mexican).

Dining out out here is just like anywhere - everything from fast food to fine dining. Our prices seem to be comparable with most areas of the country.

Oh, and you don%26#39;t have to guess on those fast food places. Just go to the respective website and use the ';locations'; feature, or post here if you have a specific one in mind.

I was reminded of Cheeburger Cheeburger - not the cheapest burger in town, teens seem to love it.

Also look at these specials: Mon-Greene Leafe Cafe 50% off burgers; Center Street Grill 241 burgers; 50% off shrimp; Tue-Shackelford%26#39;s 50% burgers; Wed-50% shrimp at Shackelford%26#39;s %26amp; Sunday-50% off snow crablegs.

    Call to confirm specials.

There are some great small places - NOT chains that are very reasonable right on Richmond Road. Check out these money saving coupons for food, shopping and activites......

Thanks for all the great information! Bridgefan asked for more information on what I am trying to do with our food budget, so here goes...

Our daughter is extremely picky and will basically only eat pasta, pizza, chicken strips, grilled cheese or PB %26amp; J sandwich, and fresh fruit. There are 3 of us (me, husband, %26amp; 11 yr old picky daughter).

We are staying at the Governor%26#39;s Inn for days 1 - 4 of our trip.

Day 1 - Arrive in Williamsburg

Dinner - take out, somewhere nearby

    Day 2 - Colonial Williamsburg

Lunch - somewhere in CW, maybe Cheese Shop, Retros or musuem cafe

Dinner - sit down meal - any ideas?

    Day 3 - Jamestown

Lunch - take out or sit down, somewhere around Jamestown

Dinner - Richmond Rd area or on way back from Jamestown?

    Day 4 - Colonial Williamsburg

    Lunch - somewhere in CW

    Dinner - Shield%26#39;s Tavern

We are staying at the Great Wolfe Lodge for days 5 %26amp; 6 of our trip...

    Day 5 - Great Wolfe

Lunch - fast food near Great Wolfe

Dinner - sit down or take out near Great Wolfe

    Day 6 - Great Wolfe

Lunch - Pizza Hut in Great Wolfe

Dinner - sit down or take out near Great Wolfe

    Day 7 leave Williamsburg

Our budget - generally I%26#39;d like to stay under $30 for lunch (some days much less - fast food) and under $40 for dinner. I know that some days we will exceed that (Shield%26#39;s Tavern) but as long as we make that up by eating cheaper for another meal, that%26#39;s OK.

Thank so much for the help! We are trying to have a great trip while staying in budget.

My budget is the same as Cmom%26#39;s %26amp; there is the same amount of people in our group.

    Thanks palmtre2 good link.

    Busch Gardens

So 2 adults %26amp; 1 child are going to Williamsburg. We are staying for 4 nights. I%26#39;m debating on going to Busch Gardens. I thought we would spend 1 day in B.G. But I%26#39;m really debating if it%26#39;s worth 1 of my days.

My son is 9 %26amp; I know he%26#39;ll enjoy it but for $194 it just seems pointless. I live by 6 Flags Great Adventure %26amp; feel that it might be a waste coming to VA just for an amusement park when we have one by us.

I saw some other things that seemed nice like renting canoes at Waller Mill Park.

I%26#39;m figuring most will tell me that since I have a 9yrs old it will be worth it, but what do I know.

    Busch Gardens

Waller Mill is great; we try to hit it every time we go. I don%26#39;t think you can feed the ducks and fish any more, which saddens us, but we still like it.

Personally, I can%26#39;t imagine going to Williamsburg and not hitting BG. But that%26#39;s just me, and we make sure we budget it into our planning. Also, make sure that you shop around for discounts on the tickets.

As for BG vs. SF:GA... Well, I%26#39;m not huge into roller coasters and I still have a blast at BG. Sure a lot of the rides will be similar, but assuming that you like amusement parks, I don%26#39;t think that BG is an experience that you should miss. There are a lot of fun shows and other fun stuff to do that I don%26#39;t think you can do at GA.

If your 9 year old does like coasters and such, I would go. They do have some really good ones.

And if nothing else, the atmosphere at BG is generally more enjoyable and easy-going than SF:GA. Growing up outside NYC, SF:GA was a frequent stop for us, and besides the drive-through safari (is that still there?) I was never really fond of the place. But that%26#39;s just me.

    Busch Gardens

What does your son like? We went to Williamsburg last year with a 9 year old boy - Busch Gardens was the best part of the trip for him and we live near a Six Flags too. He really liked Jamestown and he really disliked Colonial Williamsburg. We%26#39;re going back this year and completely ignoring CW and spending multiple days at BG. My son likes history, but he really enjoys hands on stuff rather than people in costumes lecturing him. Is your son a hands on kid?

Some tips - we started CW at the Governor%26#39;s Mansion - it bored him to tears - he started getting antsy and just really never recovered. Unless your son loves history lectures, start at the jail, brickmaker, or some of the other CW spots that are more geared to young boys - you can take the loop connector bus and get off at that end of CW rather than starting at the Mansion. The connector buses are different colors and I%26#39;m sorry I don%26#39;t remember which one drops you at the other end - some of the locals might be able to answer that.

I%26#39;d definately consider Jamestown. It%26#39;s very hands on - I think my son%26#39;s second best memory is that he got to load the cannon here. You can do the outside part early and then do the museum in the afternoon. The cafeteria is extremely pricey, but I think you can be stamped to go in and out. Put a cooler in the car and eat lunch outside and then go back in. You can spend most of one day there.

    Thanks for the tips...

1st I should mention that this CW trip was his idea not ours(what we do for our kids!)

Yes, my son also says he likes history %26amp; enjoys hands on stuff. But he can also spend all day walking around the Nat.Hist museum in NY, so I figure he%26#39;ll probably enjoy this.

Anyway, after checking things out I%26#39;m liking the idea more. I did have Jamestown Settlement %26amp; the jail on my list. I printed out all the events they have going on during the length of our visit %26amp; went over it w/ him. He seems to be interested in some of the evening events (if you have any input on them it would be nice to hear).

P.S. monster...yes great adventure still has the safari

I wish I could help on the evening events - we also had a little one with us who had just turned three. He went to bed early so we tended to just stay at the resort and do games rather than go out. I did hear good things about the ghost walk, but didn%26#39;t actually do it.

I%26#39;m wrestling with what to do in the evenings too, the little one stays up longer now, but still not too late.

SheaMe- Just out of curiosity, are you in the NY area?

    Yes we are.

I%26#39;m struggling with the same type of issue. We are going with twin 8yr old boys who like history. They are not big on scary/roller coaster type rides. So I thought we should go to BG but don%26#39;t know if it will be worth it. They are certainly past Seseme Street stuff and for some reason I%26#39;m having trouble with the website for BG (maybe because my computer is apple?). What websites are you using to see what else is around the colonial williamsburg area? One of the reservation clerks reported that there are a lot of enactments and child centered things going on during the last week in June leading up to July 4th that she thought kids would like.

NYCindy: for what it%26#39;s worth the only coaster I%26#39;ve been on at BG is the Big Bad Wolf, and I%26#39;ve probably visited the park 10-12 times over 5-6 trips in the past 9 years (I%26#39;ve lost exact count).

Being not that in to coasters I still find a great many fun things to do and see there.

This year we%26#39;re bringing my 10yo niece (a week from 11 at the time we go) for the first time; we%26#39;ve always wanted to bring her and finally are able to. She%26#39;s not too in to coasters AT ALL but she said that she thinks she%26#39;s going to try the %26#39;Wolf with her Aunt and me. And I might man up for once and try Apollo%26#39;s Chariot or Loch Ness.

Enough about my situation though; yes, there are definitely things to enjoy besides coasters. In fact, since those are their ';main'; attractions, it might even take some of the pressure off of the lines for the other rides and attractions.

It also depends on how long you%26#39;re planning on going for. We like to be down there for 6-8 days, so that leaves plenty of time for us to fit in anything that we would want to.

    Hi SheaMe,

I think it is absolutely worth it to go to BG for one of your days in the area. In fact, you may find that you wish you went for more than 1 day. BG creates an entire experience unlike any other amusement park I have yet to go to, it%26#39;s not just wall-to-wall rides. The rides are great, the park is beautiful, the shows are captivating, the ambiance is incomparable. I have nothing against renting canoes, I love that myself. But really, you can probably rent canoes nearby to your home too right? BG is something that you cannot re-do elsewhere. If you can manage it into your budget, I would definitely do it.

Thanks, Eliziam1 for putting things in perspective. It is true that we have canoeing where we are I guess I just love nature. I wish our stay was longer so I could go hiking, oh well.

I have decided to go to BG but now I%26#39;m concerned the lines are going to take all the fun of this place. I have reviewed all events in CW %26amp; the best day for us is Sun July 5th. I am not looking forward to this. I did see there is a quick pass sort of thing but it says it%26#39;s only good for the 10 most popular rides.

    Bounce Pass

Where can I find the ';Bounce Pass';? I am trying to find the best deal for 3 adults and 2 children. I am planning to go to Colonial Williamsburg and I understood about the 4 site Combo Ticket (7 days) for Jamestown/Yorktown etc which we also plan on doing. I am trying to see what is the most economical. Thanks for any advice given.

    Bounce Pass

You can find it on the Busch Gardens website. buschgardens.com/BGW2/Purchase/Visitors.aspx Regular price is $123.50 for adults 18 and up, and $102.50 for children 6-17, but if you buy on the website, it%26#39;s $98.80 for adults, and $82.00 for children. Parking is included with the Bounce Pass. Don%26#39;t know the ages of the children coming with you, but a regular ticket is $49.95 for children 3-9, and 59.95 for people age 10 and up. • 2 bedroom suite at Greensprings v 1 bed suite at Kings Creek

I would love to hear your opinions on which one I should book.Due to a special offer at Greensprings there is`nt much difference in the price of a 2 bedroom suite there and a 1 bedroom suite at Kingscreek, though the location close to Busch gardens appeals to me at Kings Creek.

The other thing to consider is which one would be closer to the best shopping malls and restaurants on Richmond rd?

2 bedroom suite at Greensprings v 1 bed suite at Kings Creek

Greensprings is the more centrally located of the two, closer to the Richmond road corridor. Kings Creek is south of town, near Busch Gardens and Water country. The two bedroom suites at Greensprings are quite spacious, and if golf is in your plans, Greensprings is on the Williamsburg National Golf course.

2 bedroom suite at Greensprings v 1 bed suite at Kings Creek

Think I will go with Greensprings, the only other even cheaper deal I came across was for The Historic Pohatan Resort, but it seems to get more negative reviews than Greensprings ,are they justified in your opinion?

Between Powhatan and Greensprings, Greensprings is the better kept resort with more positive reviews.

    Enjoy your visit!

We own at Greensprings, the units are very spacious and have the added bonus of a washer %26amp; dryer. The master bath has a large jetted soaking tub and a king size bed in the bedroom. Many units have been recently renovated. The resort also has an indoor and outdoor pool, mini golf and playground. The view of the golf course from most of the resort are awesome.

I was at Greensprings last week. We really enjoyed the resort. Rooms were great, staff was friendly, and the pool area is really nice. While we were there, we took a ';time share'; tour. We were taken to the Powatan resort. I had read some negative reports about it, so I was surprised we were being taken there to look at their rooms. Diamond resorts manages it now. We were taken to a ';renovated'; room, and it was really nice inside. Granite countertops, stainless steel kithen appliances and huge showers. It was ';top of the line';. I asked the salesman if all of the rooms were like this, and he said no. Only a few had been renovated. So the Powatan resort is being remodeled, but only a few select rooms have been done.

Greensprings here I come!,thanks for yor advice everyone.

We also have the choice between Greensprings and King%26#39;s Creek, thru my inlaws RCI timeshare week.

I did some research, and I think we have also decided on Greensprings!

Looking at the floor plans at King%26#39;s Creek, they are kind of, well, %26#39;different%26#39;. In the cottages, it looks like the units with the private deck or patio and the large jet tub are the Lock-out studio units. (they are known to be very very small....) That means that if you get the two bedroom, without the third bedroom (the lock-out) you are kind of out of luck.

The beds at King%26#39;s Creek are reported to be very hard. The beds at Greensprings are reported to be comfortable.

Since we could not be guaranteed a unit in the newest section of King%26#39;s Creek, I think we will go for Greensprings.

I am happy I saw this thread!

To the person who started this thread....

I had typed %26#39;studio%26#39;... but these are actually considered one bedroom efficiency type suites. They are very small. There are no 1 bedrooms in the Towns section of King%26#39;s Creek. (they are now renting the newest Estates section, but you would probably not get that one....)

    I would DEFINITELY go for a 2br at Greensprings. : )

    Which RCI... Greensprings, Kings Creek...

Any locals or Williamsburg travel experts...

    I am leaning towards Greensprings.

I hear that while Kings Creek is nice, the beds are HARD.

I know that there are nicer places in the area, but given that we will use my inlaws time share week for exchange, which RCI resort is better.

    Thanks!

    Which RCI... Greensprings, Kings Creek...

The reviews posted here on TA should assist you with your decision. If golf is part of your vacation plans, Greensprings is the better choice; Kings Creek is closer to Water Country and Busch Gardens, while Greensprings is more centrally located.

    Which RCI... Greensprings, Kings Creek...

You might also check the reviews on RCI%26#39;s website. Both resorts rate fairly high. My husband and I are owners at Powhatan Plan (inherited the time from my father when he died). We haven%26#39;t stayed there recently (we usually exchange it), but we enjoyed it when we have.

Greensprings is great but I%26#39;m biased I own there.

    Thanks!

Look%26#39;s like we will put in for an exchange week at Greensprings!

After a little more research (see comments on other current thread) I think we have the obvious choice.

We are looking forward to it!

    Suggestions please!

I will be staying at the Courtyard Dulles Airport in Chantilly next week. I have several hours to kill during the day and was wondering if there are any malls or pretty much anything else within walking distance or near this hotel. I won%26#39;t have a car.

    All suggestions welcome. Thank you!

    Suggestions please!

No malls. A shopping center you can walk to that has a large grocery store and a few places to eat. Nothing remarkable.

If you really want something to DO that is significant, you can go to Sully Plantation which is just up the road, or over to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum.

Sully was built by one of the Lees at the end of the 1700s

    http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/Sully/

Udvar-Hazy is nice-new, beautiful. The Space Shuttle Endeavor is in there, as well as the mother ship model from Close Encounters of the Third Kind (my favorite). But if aviation history is boring boring...I wouldn%26#39;t bother. There is an IMAX theater there.

    http://www.nasm.si.edu/udvarhazy/

For both of these spots though, I would suggest you call a cab. While they are less than 5-minutes from your hotel, they are off major highways and attempting to walk there would be foolishly dangerous.

    http://www.nasm.si.edu/udvarhazy/

If you REALLY want a mall, there is one about 15 minutes up route 50, but again, you would need a cab, and there isn%26#39;t anything there that you couldn%26#39;t find elsewhere, so I don%26#39;t know if it would be worth the effort for killing a few hours.

If you're planning on buying the Bounce Pass....

I have found 2 websites thus far to purchase the Bounce Pass. They are www.colonial williamsburg.com and Busch Gardens Website. The price is the same, the only difference I have come across is that if you purchase the tickets on-line thru Busch Gardens you must first go to Busch Gardens with your printed voucher to redeem and exchange to be able to go to Colonial Williamsburg. I was planning on visiting Colonial Williamsburg first and thus find it inconvenient, but at the colonial williamsburg site you can redeem your confirmation # at the Visitor%26#39;s Center and thus later in the week go to Busch Gardens. Depending on what you want to do first on your vacation may help you decide which website to purchase your tickets. Passing this piece of Info along.

If you're planning on buying the Bounce Pass....

Thanks Katherine! I was just about to purchase on BG website- but CW will be much more convenient for us. We are staying at Woodland%26#39;s hotel which is very close to visitors center. Perfect timing to read your tip!

    Thanks again

If you're planning on buying the Bounce Pass....

Great tip! Thanks for posting. When we went a few years ago, I bought the passes at the BG site but wanted to do CW first. It was a total pain, parking the car, taking the little tram to the front gate of BG to redeem the voucher.

Great tip! It wasn%26#39;t on the CW website until recently, and I hadn%26#39;t heard they%26#39;d added that option yet.

    Last minute bookings

Any advice on last minute bookings for one night stays? Am willing to go on less than 24 hours notice. Problem is, it is a holiday - July 4th :)

    Last minute bookings

You can try www.lastminutetravel.com although I don%26#39;t see that it distinquishes among oceanfront, across from the ocean, and across town, which is a factor when coming to the beach.

You can go to Expedia. While their ';deal and offers'; doesn%26#39;t offer VB in their drop down box, when you just fill in the ';book a trip'; you%26#39;ll see prices crossed out and reduced a week or so ahead of the date one is asking for. If you want VB, keep you eye on the ones actually in VB per se.

While the rest of the Convention and Visitors Bureau site is terrific, I can%26#39;t trust www.vbfun.com%26#39;s ';book your trip now';. This offers drop downs so you can search by pricing as well as date. Very handy in theory. But I%26#39;ve already experienced prices higher than the %26#39;grouping%26#39; they were put in and also no availability. I searched July 4, all prices. There are 6 they say are available in the mid range and 10 in the range over $199...but when you go to the %26#39;book now%26#39; those I looked up were either closed out or higher priced. But...the high price might not be an issue for you so give it a try.

If you have already tried to book, a hotel has some of its rooms and the booking sites have some of the rooms so try both.

    BG meal deal quesion

In looking at the BG site, under ';What you Need to Know Before you GO';....it says that you get 2 meals with the meal deal.

I just want to make sure I understand correctly before I purchase. So, if you buy an adult meal deal at $20 you are getting 2 meals with that 1 ticket?

    Kim

    BG meal deal quesion

There was a recent thread on the topic: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g58313-i102-k28687…

You get two meals with one purchase, and you get 4 vouchers - one for each meal which includes a beverage, and two additional drink vouchers.

    One more question....

Is this offer available only online or can you decide when you get there and buy it aat the gate??

  • Family Friendly Restaurant near UVA

We will be passing through Charlottesville on our way to DC in July. Our plan is to see Monticello in the morning and then do a quick look at UVA. We will be traveling with 3 kids, 15,13 %26amp; 8. Any suggestions for lunch near the campus?

    Family Friendly Restaurant near UVA

Lots of places to eat. What kind of food and what kind of budget? Quick or sit-down?

    Laura

    Family Friendly Restaurant near UVA

Like laurava said, there are a lot of different types of restaurants close to UVA%26#39;s Grounds (that%26#39;s what UVA calls its campus). Particularly, there is a seven-block collection of restaurants, bookstores, and shops on University Avenue, called The Corner, located across the street from the University of Virginia.

You can either sit down at a restaurant. Or, if it is a nice day, you can pick-up food, and you can have an impromptu picnic outside on the Grounds.

    Here are some notable restaurants:

Mello Mushroom (www.mellowmushroom.com/store/index.php?s=20) Pizza; Sit-down or take out; 1/4 mile from Grounds

Basil (www.basilmedbistro.com/) Mediterranean; Sit-down or take out; less than 1/4 mile from Grounds

The Virginian (www.virginianrestaurant.com) American; Sit-down; directly across from Grounds; Note: This is a favorite amound UVA student.

Take It Away (takeitawaysandwichshop.com) Sandwiches; Take out; directly across from Grounds; Note: This is a favorite among UVA students. I suggest getting the House Dressing with your sandwiches (at least on the side) because is it delicious. But beware, it is addicting.

There are many other places to eat on The Corner that I didn%26#39;t mention. If none of the places I listed appeal to you, simply walk down the Corner, and I am sure you will spot something you will like.

One more thing, parking down by UA may be a hassle if you don%26#39;t know where to look. So, for parking around the Corner: There is also a small pay parking lot right behind some of the shops on University Ave. The alley to the parking lot is right around the the CVS convenience store and a sandwich shop called Little John%26#39;s. I don%26#39;t know what the rates are, but I recall it isn%26#39;t that bad. For free parking, you may be able to find free parking on the street further down University. If there is nothing on University, try turning right onto Madison Ln. In the summer, there is usually parallel parking along the street there. Nothing there too? At the end of Madison, turn right onto Chancellor St. You may be able to find parallel parking spots along that road as well. If you would rather park in a garage, UVA offers parking on Emmet St. (virginia.edu/parking/facilities/central.html)

    Running in Alexandria

My son will need to continue his Cross Country training while on vacation. He needs to run 10-18 miles per day. We will be staying at the Lorien Hotel and Spa, 1600 King Street. Can anyone recommend a good running route or a good place to go to run? He can do multiple loops of a shorter route too. Also, is there a good place for him to run near Mount Vernon? Thanks for any assistance.

    Running in Alexandria

People have jogged and biked this trail for years:

    bikewashington.org/trails/vernon/vernon.htm

Sometimes you get people who don%26#39;t follow proper etiquette- hogging the road/out of lane/etc- but you get that anywhere so just keep a look out, moreso at twists and turns. It%26#39;s a beautiful route.

    Running in Alexandria

    That%26#39;s great information! Thanks!

He%26#39;ll see photographers some morning set up to catch the amazing sunrises over the Potomac.

when I trained for marathons, my wife and I would have an ';easy'; day just running from old town to the DC mall. It really is a great way to not only train, but sightsee. Lunch time was the most crowded time on the running/biking trail as all the office workers come out to train and we found early mornings to be the best

    enjoy

Is it a safe run from Alexandria to the DC Mall? My son was mapping out the run and he thought it might involve highway running. He runs for his school%26#39;s NCAA cross country and track teams so we always have to fit running time into our vacations. He will love all of this great information! Thanks everyone!

(I wish with the new changes on the site they added a change so that you can actually see the other posts when you reply.)

I am a bit of safety nut, so I would not recommend that you son run after dark. Otherwise, the running/biking trail only crosses the highway in a few instances and it is much much safer and better set up now then when i ran marathons. The memorial bridge from Arlington cemetery has nice broad sidewalks. Still, as a parent, I can understand your concerns. My recommendation is to post a new message in the DC forum asking about running From the Mall to Old Town. The DC forum get much more traffic than this one and you will get the most current and helpful advice faster from a larger pool. However posters like Explorer 3 or Bbbyers are great sources of info, right on this forum

It seems your son might be younger than I thought. Just realize this is part urban rushrush and part suburban natural beauty. The Parkway is a main artery into DC for all the countless people who live in the many subdivisions along there. It is also an alternative for those in South Alexandria since Rt. 1 has lights and the Parkway has very very view.I have had friends wind up down a hillside along the Parkway because of oncoming human traffic out of its lane. During rush hour...should be hours...I have had a friend trying to cross from her residential area to the path to bike to DC to her job, which she did every day in nice weather, and a car hit her. It can be crazy. It is a little hard to understand all the traffic whizzing by on the Parkway, especially from about midway up into DC, while at the same time there is lovely parkland with families throwing balls and having picnics and looking for smooth stones and such beside the river on the other side of the path. When we lived there we often had picnic lunches in the green spaces.

PS. To clarify....as charm says, just stay in the corrent lane, keep an eye out for anyone out of lane and it%26#39;ll be a great experience.

    Beach Chair rentals

My husband and I are planning a quick trip to VB in between a family visit to Franktown. We are staying at a no frills hotel across the street from the beach and wanted to know if you can rent beach chairs, etc. anywhere in the area?

    Thanks!!

    Beach Chair rentals

There are beach chair and umbrella rentals on the beach. I can%26#39;t find anything that says their locations.

You can also rent bicycles at Cheri%26#39;s: http://www.cheriesbikes.com/

There are also several Sunsations stores up and down the main drag, Atlantic Ave. Everything you need for the beach.

Which hotel have you found? We%26#39;re always looking for good deals.

    Beach Chair rentals

Thanks for the info. We are looking at the 19 Atlantic Hotel. It is definitely no frills and small rooms but only a block from the beach at $89/night in August and most importantly seems fairly new and clean. Everything else is incredibly expensive and doesn%26#39;t look so great. Unfotunately we have to be frugal this year!!

So if we go for it I will let you know how it was.

Lots of good info here in this older topic. Locations of the rentals and prices.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g58277-i63-k261130…

Am I missing something? I see the Sunsation store locations but not the rentals.

Bostongirl1, do let us know about how the hotel works for you. Can we help with anything else?

Sorry explorer, I thought I had put that in my post on that topic. They are stationed at about every entrance to the beach from the boardwalk. They set the chairs and umbrellas up in the mornings and they are usually sitting close to the big white boxes (about 4-5 ft tall) close to where they set the chairs up. If you just go to the chair you want, the worker will come to you.

BUT, it is much cheaper to buy your own umbrella and chair from Sunsations than to rent for the day. And if you don%26#39;t want to lug it home, lay it out by the trash can or ask someone sitting close by if they want it when you are done.

Thanks for the info. I will let you know how the hotel was when we get back.

Leisa, we bring our own but I see them all the time but it doesn%26#39;t register exactly which streets. The compulsive in me has an idea to sometime walk the boardwalk and note every restaurant, activity, business, foot rinse off, etc:)

    Thanks.

Not sure what you mean explorer, but we always stayed at Station One, and at that entrance to the beach from the board walk (24th street), there is a BIG white wooden box about halfway between the ocean and the boardwalk (They use it to store equipment such as umbrellas in) and a guy sets up the chairs every morning. He has the chairs that are to the left and to the right of that entrance (on either side of the wooden handicap accessible walkway to the water). I have noticed when I walked the boardwalk, that at about every entrance (or at the very least it is every other entrance) to the beach/ocean from the boardwalk, about halfway to the water, there is a BIG white box and a guy (or girl I guess) who sets up the chairs and umbrellas. They usually sit in a chair close to the box. If you go to a chair and put your stuff down, the guy (or girl) will come to you (with a clipboard) to get your money.

Yes, I%26#39;ve seen them on the sand close to the boardwalk too. Big white box. Thing is there seem to be several up and down the beach. Lots available.

Anybody know what a days chair rentals usually runs??? I seem to remember it being pretty expensive, like $25 for the day??? What about umbrellas???

    Braddock Road Metro Safety

Not to be alarmist, but realistic. I have posted in the past that some very nice hotels with reasonable rates within walking distance of Braddock road metro REQUIRE a car in my opinion for nightime. While the washington subway system is safe enough, the area surrounding Braddock Road metro is less than optimal for tourist walking. I opined that it is a needless risk to stay near there and walk to old town. In response, various posters have scoffed about my concerns. Here is a very recent posting about a fatal shooting just 2 blocks from Braddock Road metro at 6 pm (hardly late night)

    washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20…

I have been glad to see that recent postings have concentrated on hotels near King street metro which gives a much nicer and truer impression of our town.

Alexandria is still super safe but the housing developments near Braddock Road Metro are not prime strolling areas. It%26#39;s just the combination of warehouse, industrial area, light foot traffic and ';tougher'; areas in Braddock Road Metro still overwhelms the gentrification of the new condos. bottom line is that if you do not want a car and want to be able to walk to and from a subway metro to DC or walk to old town - look in the King street metro area instead of Braddock Road metro.

    Just my opinion -

    Braddock Road Metro Safety

I ditto Charm, you are spot on, and much more diplomatic than I could be! I certainly wouldn%26#39;t stroll the area for sure and I live here.

Driving from Savannah to Richmond, VA: Where to stop?

    Hello all,

I wonder if you might have suggestions and expertise to share with me! I%26#39;m driving from Savannah to Richmond over the course of one and a half days (one day of major driving, plus one day ideally with some driving plus lots of little stops). My driving options, Mapquest tells me, are to take 1-95, US-1 N, or I-85 N. I imagine I could also take a coastal route, which sounds lovely. I would like to take the coastal route for the South and North Carolina portions of the trip, at least.

I don%26#39;t know this part of the world at all so I%26#39;m not sure how to organize my trip. I%26#39;d love to see interesting little towns and beautiful sites (which is a vote against major highways, of course). Where do you suggest I stop along the way for lunch, a walk, a quick sight? What shouldn%26#39;t I miss as I head north?

If you were doing this drive, what would you do?

    Thanks!

Driving from Savannah to Richmond, VA: Where to stop?

Here are a couple of general routes to consider, check maps, available time, points of interest, etc and see if any of these ideas sound good, others are sure to give you good suggestions too.......

95N to 70E to 17N you will see Morehead City, Boque Banks (outer Banks area, includes Atlantic Beach, Crystal Coast, Emerald Isle) nestled between Atlantic Ocean %26amp; Intracoastal Waterway, continue 17N to Edenton NC, very nice downtown waterfront on the Albemarle Sound, continue 17N to 460N through Petersburg and on to Richmond.

95N to 17N to 64E, includes Manteo very quaint and on to Outer Banks of NC, includes Hatteras, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, very slow going on the Outer Banks if your trip is during the summer...lots of traffic and basically one road, but very cool especially if you like the beach.

95N to 26W to 77N, this route takes you through scenic mountain areas, Charlotte NC and small towns in western Va ie. Galax, Floyd, Fries, then take 64E to Charlottesville, very interesting visit Monticello, UVA, Shenandoah National Park is nearby too, then continue to Richmond.

For the Va section of your trip, check www.virginia.org as well as TA attractions and forum sections for things to do in specific areas once you decide on your route. Hope this helps.

    Happy trails

    Sudden trip, need help please!

Just learned DH will go to Arlington for business this Friday for three days. I%26#39;d like to go along with our two kids, 8 and 10. I am the family ';planner';, but have never been to the DC area.

Can anyone suggest a suite-type hotel that%26#39;s not too expensive? Maybe with a pool?

What are the ';must sees'; for kids this age - such a short trip?

Also, I%26#39;d like not to drive. I%26#39;ll be on my own with the kids while DH is in meetings and I fear driving in that chaos.

Is there a tour available to drive by a lot of the sites?

    Evening Events

I have some events in mind %26amp; checked the forum %26amp; called the # for some info.

I have a 9yr old boy (birthday in oct). I am interested in seeing Cry Witch %26amp; Crime%26amp;Punishment. The representative Told me what they were about %26amp; the ending. I think my son would be fine with this, although I will talk with him about it b/f getting tix. But I would also like to hear from anyone who has brought their children to these events.

    Evening Events

These programs are both pretty intense. Having seen them both, I would not take take a pre-teen child to see them. Consider the Tavern Ghost Walk and the Lanthorn Tour -- both are kid friendly and good programs, and you%26#39;ll have just as much fun.

    Evening Events

Some of the punishments represented in Crime and Punishment may seem gruesome to those of a sensitive nature and those portraying the recently departed may be frightening to young children. That said, the reason these programs are not recommended for children is to dissuade parents from bringing children who cannot sit still or refrain from talking, singing, crying for an hour while a court trial is reenacted.

These presentations are rather like theater, with the to-the-gut punch of a living, breathing person in the same room with you who is in trouble, hurting, fearful, angry or unsure.

It%26#39;s my personal opinion that theater is wonderful for kids. It touches the soul in ways that most movies, tv or games, with their plasticized glamor, do not. Furthermore, the suffering you will see depicted in Williamsburg, while very humanized, is closely delimited by the historic context. Your son will not go to bed fearful that tomorrow somebody might accuse him of using black arts on the neighbor%26#39;s animals. He will, however, most likely take a step towards those two opposites -- analytical ability and compassion -- that he needs to grow into a proper man.

And if you can find a better result than that for an evening%26#39;s entertainment, I%26#39;d be surprised! I hope you go, and I hope you ALL enjoy!

    Jamestown/Yorktown....wondering

We are scheduled to arrive 7/6 for our first time visit with 15, 10 and 7-year-old. Plan on CW, BG. We will have 4 full days and wondering if it will be worth the $$ to do Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown? I%26#39;ve visited the site, just wondering if there is enough to keep everyone interested?

The big things that would draw my gan would be boarding one of the ships, maybe loading a canon, watching a reenactment of a battle? What else besides that?

Just trying to weigh if it is worth an additional $75 for us to go there on top of all the other ticket costs.

    TIA,

    Kim

    Jamestown/Yorktown....wondering

    Hi, kimber --

First off, at the most superficial level, the representation of 17th century life among natives and European arrivals both, is very good. You wander around replica villages and talk with enactors, and bump your heads in the incredibly tight quarters of the replica ships ... it%26#39;s a very physical experience.

At a deeper level, the story of our nation very much depends on what happened in Jamestown in the 1600s. You are going to Williamsburg, presumably, to connect with your heritage as an American, in a way that you can%26#39;t do anywhere else. You are spending plenty of time and money to do this. I can%26#39;t think of a better way to spend $75, under the circumstances, than to begin at the beginning!

    Have a great trip!

    Trip Report Part 2

This part of the trip report is a hodge podge of things we saw and experienced.

We walked from the Visitors Center over the footbridge into Great Hopes Plantation(currently closed on Wednesday the week we were there). It is an ongoing restoration of a plantation with buildings including a corn shed, smokehouse and slave house; gardens and fields with corn, herbs, etc.;free roaming guinea hens and excellent interpreters. The carpenters spent time answering all questions we had about how their skills were used in the 1700%26#39;s. Make sure you see the ';Apple Orchard'; and learn its history.

There is a small cafe at the Bookstore at the Visitors Center. We needed a break; so got a pretzel roll and ice teas and took them into the small outside courtyard. It is surrounded by a tall brick wall which provides privacy.

Another day we drove to La Tienda in Toano. We had looked at their web site prior to visiting. It is a very small gourmet store specializing in Spanish foods--olives, olive oils, cooking items, cheeses, hams, etc.

This last subject is just our own observation of a place we used to always enjoy going to for an occasional breakfast. Others are free to disagree with me. It is Sammy and Nick%26#39;s Pancake House on Pocahontas Trail. My husband used to think they served some of the best country ham and grits in the area. No more. The quality of food has declined greatly in our minds; and, we will no longer go there. Again, I realize everything is subjective.

The economy has definitely affected tourism in the area--we did see several large tour buses, many of them filled with school age children. Parking lots at hotels appeared rather empty as opposed to full.

Some visitors were complaining that not all of the exhibition buildings were open every day.

We enjoyed a current exhibition at Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museam by Asa Ames. He did wonderful wooden sculptures of people--so detailed and different. It will be there until early January 2010.

We found almost all of the CW employees to be very friendly and courteous--the only exception was one bus driver who literally yelled at my husband and another man because they were standing on the yellow line by the back door of the bus and she couldn%26#39;t open the door? The only reason they were standing there was because the bus was so crowded it was a tiny bit of free space. Oh, well.

    Trip Report Part 2

Thanks for day 2. I hope that business picks up in the area. When we were there in March not all buildings were open everyday butI found the online schedule to be pretty accurate so we were able to see evrything we wanted in 3 days.

    Trip Report Part 2

I know just what you mean ecs. During prior stays at the Lodge we were forced to find a parking spot across the street because both the underground parking and outside lots were completely full. Not this time--ample spots available.

Hopefully the economy will improve and people again will choose to visit this incredible living history museum.
