hotel near mt. vernon recreation center

I am unfamiliar with the Alexandria area and I am looking for a hotel with easy access to the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center for an early July stay. I have been encouraged to stay away from the beltway. Is staying away from the beltway even an option?

Any advice is really appreciated!

The area within the mailing address of greater Alexandria covers a very large territory, with heavy congested traffic within that large area. I am familiar with the Mount Vernon Rec. Center - I took my kids skating there. It%26#39;s located a couple miles south of the Beltway (outside the Alexandria city limits). You will definitely need a hotel in the Richmond Highway corridor (Richmond Highway is another name for U.S. Route 1 just south of Alexandria) - but don%26#39;t stay too far south (not as far as the 8000 block). A search on http://www.fxva.com/sleepeatshop/hotels shows the following hotels are on Richmond Highway all within 2 -3 miles of the Rec. Center:

Quality Inn, Richmond Hwy (866) 969-8065

Hampton Inn, 5821 Richmond Hwy (800) 426-7866

Quality Inn, 7212 Richmond Hwy (800) 433-2546

Red Roof Inn, 5975 Richmond Hwy (800) 733-7663

I also tried a search on ';yahoo yellow pages'; for hotels closest to the Rec. Center%26#39;s address, but yahoo%26#39;s data seems very faulty. It omitted some hotels that are on Richmond Highway, but included some others that are much further north.

Also I forgot to mention, the Days Inn, at 6100 Richmond Highway (877) 477-5817.

Thank you so much for your help. Are these hotels in a safe neighborhood? A friend of a friend suggested the Old Town area as the only safe area some what near the Rec center. Do you agree?

Again thanks for the info!

Ok...so I know this area intimately. The rec center is off the main business thoroughfare of Rt. 1. and is close enough to old town, that, pending your budget...would make for a more memorable visit. One fact...the Mt. Vernon Rec Center is in the ';Belle Haven/Belle View area of Fairfax County...just off of Ft. Hunt Road about a mile from the Rt. 1 intersection which adjoins the exit from Interstate 495 south.

The Red Roof Inn is just off the highway at the Ft. Hunt Rd/Rt. 1 intersection. It is well lit and typical as far as RRI%26#39;s go. For $79/night in the DC area...not sure what folks are expecting from RRI, QI, or DI hotels.

As Mist so kindly noted for you above, there are a host of the budget hotels that line Rt 1..which are surrounded by mom %26amp; pop hotels that tend to attract police activity....so I mention for your information. You can google map the addresses and check the surrounding area via ';Street View';.

I highly recommend the Hampton Inn which is removed from the locals and is safe if even on Rt. 1 and the beltway. TA gives it good ratings. Otherwise, check out hotels available in Old Town Historic District focusing on zip code 22314 for a much better experience that allows you to walk, eat and explore our historic town. I always recommend the Residence Inn on Duke Street as they provide bfast/snacks/dinner and is safe and located within the historic district. Center on area near 1800 block of King Street, Alexandria.

Write back and let us know if you need more help.

Thank you Marylandmist and bbbyers for all your advise and information!! Much appreciated!!!!
