Trip Report

My husband and I were in Williamsburg from June 6th to June 14th, 2009.

We arrived at the Williamsburg Lodge a little before 2:30 PM after an 8 hour drive. We knew it was early for check-in; and, our room was not ready. So, we went to the ticket office to get our complimentary hotel guest passes(minimum 4 night stay required).

What a pleasure it was to see Judy still worked there. She could not do enough to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. We looked through ';This Week'; to see programs offered that we wanted to see and got tickets for them right away.

One program was ';Duties of the President%26#39;s Wife'; about Martha Washington. At the end of the program, the interpretor returned to the stage as herself in the present time answering questions from the audience.

The next program we saw was ';America%26#39;s Music--the Influence of Scottish Fiddle Music';. John Turner was exceptional in his knowledge of and performance on several different instruments.

Even though we have seen most of Thomas Jefferson%26#39;s programs during prior visits, we always catch one or two because the interpretation is always a bit different. The one titled ';A Conversation with President Jefferson'; was excellent, as usual.

We arrived early for ';Daughters of Liberty'; at the Raleigh Tavern. Space is limited; and many people were turned away. The program was described as how women contributed to the fight for independence using words and wit.

Some of our time was spent doing that all important past time of shopping. But, we often took books to Merchant%26#39;s Square or the Historic Area, found a shady bench, relaxed and read or people watched.

Weather was mainly hot, humid with rain a couple days for brief perios. Thunderstorms and lightening sent people scrambling for cover.

As a treat to ourselves, we went to the outside terrace of the Williamsburg Inn a couple times for an after dinner drink. The setting is beautiful--large trees, lovely landscaping overlooking part of the golf course, and bunnies, squirrels and ducks. My husband spotted a rare site--a beautiful pale green luna moth on one of the Inn%26#39;s windows.

When time permits, I will do specific reviews of The Lodge, Emerald Thai, Fat Canary, Chez Trinh, Dudley%26#39;s Farmhouse Grille, The Cheese Shop, Charles City Tavern, The Blue Heron and Aromas.

I%26#39;ll review Five Fork%26#39;s Cafe now--it is a relaxing, casual place that had both locals and visitors. I had the turkey dinner which consisted of 3 rather large slices of turkey breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce and I chose a side of cole slaw. My husband had the liver and onions, potatoes and slaw. Service was friendly and not as rushed as I had expected it to be; and we both enjoyed our dinners. With a couple glasses of ice tea the bill was about $25.
