Presale tickets for Monticello

Can you order presale tickets to visit Monticello? Planning on visiting on Sunday, July 5

Presale tickets for Monticello

Go to www.monticello.org/visit/getting_tickets.html and click on reserved tickets. Good idea to reserve in advance, it%26#39;s a very popular weekend at Monticello because of the naturalization ceremony on July 4.

I don%26#39;t know how much time you have planned for Charlottesville, but a side tour of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia campus adds to the Thomas Jefferson experience. Great choices for lunch or dinner on our pedestrian Downtown Mall (www.downtowncharlottesville.net) not too far from the University.

There is a little cafe at Monticello with quality lunch/salad choices and there is a touristy lunch place called Michie Tavern that has a buffet with fried chicken that you will pass to and from Monticello.

Enjoy your visit.

Thanks for the link. I had the day wrong though that we will be in Charlottesville. We are going to be there Monday, July 6 --- so since it isn%26#39;t on a weekend do you still recommend getting the presale tickets?

If you get there early in the day it shouldn%26#39;t be a problem.

I see the tickets are $ 20 now. For a family of 4 that adds up to $ 80 plus service charge if I buy the tickets online. What do you think about just seeing the University Tour and the Rotunda? I think I read somewhere that it is free. Do you know if that is right? Or, do they even offer it in the summer? Do you know a link where I could get more information about touring that? I would love to see Monticello, but for $ 80, I%26#39;m not so sure if it is worth that. Are there any AAA discounts or area coupons do you know? Any other places to tour in the area, that would be similar but cheaper? The economy has forced us try and stick to a vacation budget lower than ever!

During the summer you have to tour UVA yourself but you can print out the descriptions of the Rotunda, Academic Village, gardens from: http://www.virginia.edu/uvatours/rotunda/ It%26#39;s not a substitute for Monticello, but gives you a flavor of the architecture. Monticello tours encompass not only TJ%26#39;s personal life, but life at the time of his family, friends, and slaves. It includes a tour of the actual home, slave quarters, and the gardens. It%26#39;s very comprehensive and the tour guides are great.

Monticello admission for adults is expensive and costs much less for children up to 11 yrs. I don%26#39;t know of any deals unless you are a local resident. If your family is very interested in that part of American history then it%26#39;s a good investment. If you think there will be boredom after one hour (all three of my kids had to do the tour in elementary school and like most kids their age, there wasn%26#39;t enough to entertain them for more than the hour), then perhaps save it for another time. It%26#39;s hard to balance value for the dollar on a vacation. For us, it%26#39;s usually the cost of food- unless you%26#39;re going for the food. If you need suggestions for inexpensive eats, please let me know.
