Travel to DC from here - how long by train/metro?

We are visiting DC soon and I was considering staying in Fredericksburg and using that as our base. Possibly staying at the KOA there - we will be staying in our travel trailer. We plan on spending 2 days in DC and then a day at the Kings Dominion park as we have 2 young children with us. Can anyone advise me how to get to DC from here, what parking will be like, how long it will take etc. It looks like a nice town but I need to decide whether to try and stay a bit closer or not.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Travel to DC from here - how long by train/metro?

Fredericksburg is pretty far out-over 65 miles and served by one of the worst commuter traffic nightmares in the D.C. area-I-95/295.

Metro is not an option for you from there. Closest station would be Springfield, and driving from Fredericksburg to Springfield would be just as big of a pain. There are so many issues-parking at Metro, etc.

You do have access to the commuter train-the Virginia Railway Express from Fredericksburg. Their website is here

http://www.vre.org/

VRE is only available on weekdays as it serves commuters, so if you are planning on making this trip on a weekend, then forget VRE as an option. If you are going to be there on a weekend, then Metro is a better option, but you still have to drive to Springfield to the closest station which is about 55 miles.

Now Fredericksburg is a great base for Kings Dominion.

Give us more details on the dates you will be staying and we will help you iron it out and give you more options.

Thanks for the advice. We will be leaving IL on Saturday June 13th, arriving DC area around 3pm on Sunday 14th. Was hoping to spend Monday and Tuesday in DC, first day doing a tour bus, seeing some of the monuments and possibly Arlington. Tuesday again in DC - probably seeing Natural History and Air and Space Museums. Wednesday was planning on going to Kings Dominion to give the kids a bit of a reward after 2 days of sightseeing. Thursday moving on to Natural Bridge in VA. Looks as though I will have to look again for a campsite closer to DC. Originally I had looked at Cherry Hill in the College Park area - but there again this is a longer drive to the amusement park. Overall though, this is looking like the best option. Shame...Fredericksburg looks really nice. Perhaps on another trip....

BitmomIllinois,

We are currently staying at the Motel6 in Federicksburg and have been traveling to DC with ease. It takes us about 40 mins to get to exit 169A which is where the Springfield Metro station is. Parking is 4.50 a day, you just have to leave out of the 4th floor and pay by credit card only. A unlimited pass on Metro is 6.50 a day per person. The unlimited pass is valid after 9:30am so it gives u time to eat breakfast and sleep in. I will be honest we haven%26#39;t explored Fredricksburg yet but so far everyone we have met has been very nice and at 39.99 a night it%26#39;s a steal! Good luck!

Trip Report: WIlliamsburg, Part III, Restaurants

In mid-May, we spent at week at Wyndham Kingsgate Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia as part of a special promotion by RCI, the timeshare trading company. Our Trip Report on that trip is divided into three segments: travel and activities, accommodations, and restaurants. This is the segment on restaurants.

Thanks to responses to a pre-trip Travel Advisor post asking for suggestions for restaurants in the Williamsburg area, we tried several restaurants we’d never visited before, plus a few chosen simply because of “timing and convenience” considerations. In our post, we asked for suggestions for “non-fancy, reasonably-priced” places that “the locals” liked to visit for breakfast, lunch and “supper” (as opposed to “dinner”).

For BREAKFAST, we tried:

The Gazebo, US 60 Bypass We visited twice because it was convenient to our timeshare

unit. We thought the food was okay, but the service was inconsistent.

Five Forks Café, John Tyler Highway A cozy, unpretentious, family-run place that reminded us of our favorite local breakfast place at home. A simple, fully adequate menu provided a good breakfast at a very reasonable price.

International House of Pancakes, Richmond Road Yes, it is a chain….but we wanted a late breakfast and it was convenient. The food was better than expected, the dining area was clean and pleasant, and the service was among the best we encountered all week. Don’t write this one off too quickly.

The Old Chickahominy House, Jamestown Road After some rather strong TA recommendations, we had fairly high hopes for this one and found ourselves quite disappointed. The “Old South” décor is cute, but the tables in the smallish dining area are so close together the staff and guests have trouble getting past one another, servers are continually brushing against whoever is seated closest to the narrow aisle, and our table for two was barely big enough for juice glasses, coffee cups and two breakfast plates. It just felt cramped. And while the food was adequate, it didn’t seem to quite measure up to the cost. The eclectic gift shop attached to the restaurant did provide a bit of post-breakfast entertainment. We’d probably skip this one on another trip to the area.

Manhattan Bagel Shop, US 60/Richmond Road Good, quick, order-at-the-counter kind of place for a quick, simple, affordable breakfast. Good bagels and a wide variety of cream cheeses. We liked it for what it was,

LUNCHES

Aroma’s, Merchant’s Square Area Generous sandwiches on hearty, flavorful breads and rolls. A funky, interesting atmosphere if you can find an empty table among all the college students working on their laptop computers.

Surrey House Restaurant, Rt 31, Surry Well worth the 20 minute Jamestown-Scotland Ferry Ride, especially in nice weather. We found it to be an exceptionally neat, clean, family-run restaurant with generous, flavorful soups, sandwiches and luncheon plates at very reasonable prices. It’s about four miles down Rt 31 from the ferry terminal, on the right just beyond the traffic light where Routes 31 and 10 cross one another. We liked it a lot.

The King’s Arms Tavern, Williamsburg Colonial District Good food in a truly historic setting. We loved their ginger ale! The sandwiches were large and good, but seemed slightly over-priced (we’re not used to paying $13.00 for a sandwich!).

Charly’s, Williamsburg Airport Terminal The staff seemed a bit over-whelmed the day we were there, but it’s an interesting setting for anyone with an interest in airplanes. The dining room and outside dining patio are immediately adjacent to the aircraft parking ramp, with the runway just beyond that….a great spot for anyone with an interest in small planes. The crab cake sandwich special-of-the-day brought out lots of :”locals” and they’d run out of several items by the time we arrived about 1:15, but the bread/roll around our sandwiches was spectacular and the fruit on the sandwich plates was obviously freshly cut. They were having a tough day the day we were there, but we’d definitely give them another chance when we’re in the area again.

SUPPERS

Food for Thought, Richmond Road Voted “Williamsburg’s Best New Restaurant” a couple of years ago, it features a classy but straightforward décor of thought-provoking quotes from numerous authors stenciled onto the walls in large print. It offers a diverse menu with full-meal prices ranging from $12-24.00. Their dishes are creative, well-prepared and well-served. The staff readily discusses the ingredients and preparation of menu items and seems to genuinely enjoy doing so. We enjoyed our first visit of the week with them so much we went back again later in the week.

Blue Talon Bistro, Merchant’s Square Area A strong TA recommendation from a previous patron prompted our visit. But we found this a place definitely better suited to a special-occasion dinner than a casual mid-week vacation supper. The food was good, but somehow didn’t seem to quite live up to the expectation created by the TA review, the atmosphere or the menu. It also turned out to be our most expensive meal of the week.

Season’s Restaurant, Merchant Square Area Two of the best seasoned, best prepared and best served meals we had all week. Our steaks were absolutely outstanding and more than worth the price. The service was attentive without being obtrusive. It was definitely worth a second visit, but we ran out of days-in-town before getting back there.

The Surrey House, Rt 31, Surrey (See also our comments under “Lunches”. A simple, straightforward supper, followed by a just-pre-sunset ferry ride back to Jamestown. Their chicken-fried-chicken was crisp and juicy and the grilled pork chops were tender and flavorful. Their house salad dressing is described as “an interesting cross between Thousand Island and French” and that’s just what it tastes like – we liked it a lot! Exceptionally clean and neat, attentive service, easy on the pocketbook, and a nice break from the hustle-and-bustle of in-town Williamsburg eating-places. It’s well worth the short drive and ferry ride to get there.

In summary, we’d probably go back to:

Five Fork Café on the John Tyler Highway

Manhatten Bagel Shop on Richmond Road/US 60.

Surrey House Restaurant in Surry

Food for Thought, Richmond Road, and

Seasons, Merchant’s Square

We’d likely go back to:

The Gazebo, US 60 Bypass

International House of Pancakes, Richmond Road

Aroma’s, Merchant’s Square

The King’s Arms Tavern, Colonial District

Charly’s, Williamsburg Airport

And we’d probably skip another visit to:

Old Chickahominy House Restaurant, Jamestown Road

Blue Talon Bistro, Merchant’s Square

…..especially with so m any other Williamsburg restaurants we still haven’t visited yet.

Best Place to eat crabs in the Virginia Beach area

We are staying at Cherrystone Campgrounds (north side of the Bay Bridge Tunnel) We are willing to travel to Virgina Beach. We would like some information on places to get good crabs. Anywhere in the area would be fine. Thanks

I don%26#39;t suggest you try to go there on a weekend evening, though.

Yes, agreed-also can try Bubba%26#39;s or Dockside. Both located right next to Chick%26#39;s.

Trip Report

A friend and I had another nice stay in Virginia Beach at Memorial Day! We stayed at the Sandcastle Resort (though I don%26#39;t think it lives up to being called a ';resort'; it met our needs just fine) and the free continental breakfast each morning is a nice perk. We really enjoyed our room%26#39;s oceanfront balcony and the hotel%26#39;s proximity to the pier. We loved the wide, clean beach for walking, and the boardwalk (busy with pedal cars and roller bladers) for people watching.

We had crabcake sandwiches at Ocean Eddie%26#39;s on the pier for lunch, which come with nice crispy fries and a dill pickle. They have good frozen drinks and desserts too. I had the triple chocolate mousse--yum.

We had a terrific dinner at Waterman%26#39;s one evening. The valet parking made me think it would be ridiculously expensive, but really their prices were in line with other seafood restaurants there and the food was very, very good. (Way better than the seafood buffet we tried the evening before.) I had the fried seafood platter with jumbo shrimp, succulent scallops and an especially delicious crab cake. Too bad I had no room left for the mashed potatoes and hush puppies, let alone dessert. I appreciated the nice ambience and service, and was impressed by how many of their tables offer an ocean view.

I also booked a spa package at Salon @ 31, and for $150 I got 2 hours of bliss--a facial, swedish massage, spa pedicure, shampoo and style--all wonderful and worth every penny. They even brought me a complimentary glass of wine while I had my pedicure! Ahhh....

We took in a movie (Night at the Museum 2) at the AMC theatres in Lynnhaven Mall, where they have a theatre with an IMAX screen. It was probably not worth the extra money to see it in IMAX when the movie didn%26#39;t seem to have been filmed to take advantage of the IMAX experience, but the extra large screen and stadium seating are nice.

From our balcony we watched people parasailing, and I decided I wanted to try it. We went to Rudee Inlet Parasailing, the ones with the smiley face parasails. It was so much fun, and it felt very safe and easy, not scary at all! It was worth it to me to buy the photo package, since the first mate is in the best position to take pictures of your elated face as you lift off, float on air, and gently land again. Then once you%26#39;re safely back on the boat, he hands you the SD memory card with about 25 pictures of you having the time of your life!

We had hoped to visit the new exhibit at the Aquarium, but it didn%26#39;t open on schedule, so we%26#39;ll have to come back to Virginia Beach again for that someday! :)

Thanks for your annual newsy updates.

Fish/Seafood shop in Virginia Beach

Can anyone suggest a good Fish/Seafood shop in Virginia Beach? I saw a post for one in 2006, but that was a long time ago! Thanks

Fish/Seafood shop in Virginia Beach

On Shore Drive, which is on the bay side, there is a market in front of the Dockside restaurant. We shop there all the time, very good, very fresh.

I need advice on the best routes to travel in virginia beach area. I have never been to VB but was thinking about driving the BBT and northward. Help.

    traffic and travel

Need a little more info-where are you coming from?

    traffic and travel

We will be in Virginia Beach and i think we are going to travel northward towards to visit the wild horses.

That would be US 13, but do you need help getting to the highway? If so, you can use mapquest.com, and then ask questions if it%26#39;s not clear or you want local knowledge for best route.

Hampton Inn and Suites University of Virginia

I%26#39;d like to stop in Charlottesville on a trip back from North Carolina in June. Is the Hampton Inn and Suites a good choice for a family with three young kids? I%26#39;d like to try to see Monticello or walk to the university or into downtown; is this hotel convenient for that?

If you have any recommendations for things nearby to see or places to eat, I%26#39;d appreciate it. Thanks!

Hampton Inn and Suites University of Virginia

I%26#39;ve stayed at this hotel and it%26#39;s nice, and convenient to the University. Whether you could walk to either to University or to downtown from here depends upon how far your kids can walk, and how they handle hills. Drive around the area before you decide whether walking will work for your young ones.

Monticello is several miles outside of town, but not too far off the highway. I highly recommend it if you%26#39;ve never been there. They recently opened a new visitor center.

I%26#39;ll let other recommend restaurants that may be appropriate for families; there are plenty in that area.

Hampton Inn and Suites University of Virginia

Yes, Monticello, walking the university to take pictures, and walking the pedestrian downtown mall is doable in a day. For breakfast, try the Bluegrass Grill downtown and for a nice treat try the doughnuts at Spudnuts..they are wonderful.

Thanks to both of you for your feedback! It sounds like a good place for us to stay.

You didn%26#39;t mention how small your kids are. The hotel is on a busy street and it%26#39;s a pretty good hike to the actual UVA campus (closer to the med center). There are sidewalks, but you are walking by parking lots, businesses, and through some big intersections. Definitely not walking distance to the Downtown Mall. The Hampton Inn is a decent place to stay, but I would limit walking to the UVA campus to the daylight hours. Plan ahead what you want to see at the UVA campus, it%26#39;s quite a large campus. While West Main St, where the hotel is located, has many restaurants, Wild Wings is probably the most kid friendly. It%26#39;s down near the Amtrack station. Teens and older love eating on the Corner (UVA campus) at places like the College Inn, but even with the regular college session out, the area can get pretty rowdy in the evening with all the local kids home for the summer. The Downtown Mall (a pedestrian friendly brick outdoor mall) has a lot of outdoor eateries, the Virginia Discovery Museum (for children), and the indoor ice skating park. Henry%26#39;s on the Downtown Mall has traditional family restaurant fare that kids love and has indoor/outdoor seating. Sal%26#39;s is Italian and Christian%26#39;s and Vito Nova have great pizza. Another kid friendly place to eat if you get there early enough for a booth seat is Chap%26#39;s, where you can get a burger/hot dog/grilled cheese and homemade icecream is a treat. Splendora%26#39;s has Italian gelato. The Nook serves traditional breakfast with a number of coffee/tea spots also serving muffins and pastries. The Omni is a Mall anchor with an indoor pool. On Sundays they serve brunch with serving section dedicated to children. Check out www.downtowncharlottesville.net with a list of places and things to do in the downtown area. Monticello is easy to get to and not far from downtown. If you%26#39;re so inclined, there are a number of hiking opportunities as well. You can check former posts for good descriptions.

    Have fun!

    Laura

I think the Hampton Inn is a great choice but when traveling with a family I have always thought vacation rentals were a great option because they are usually cheaper for groups + everybody gets to stay all together. There is a great site in c%26#39;ville that recently launched a new site http://uva.collegeweekends.com/default.aspx . They have a bunch of properties and you can see them all on a map so you can pick the ones closest to the University. You can also sort the listings by proximity to the university which is nice. Good luck I am sure you will have a great trip.

I love the information I get on this site. Your tips are very helpful: I%26#39;m now rethinking staying at the Hampton and might do a vacation rental closer to the pedestrian mall. I%26#39;d like to be walking distance from that. I also plan to check out the museum.

    Thanks again!
