Travel to DC from here - how long by train/metro?

We are visiting DC soon and I was considering staying in Fredericksburg and using that as our base. Possibly staying at the KOA there - we will be staying in our travel trailer. We plan on spending 2 days in DC and then a day at the Kings Dominion park as we have 2 young children with us. Can anyone advise me how to get to DC from here, what parking will be like, how long it will take etc. It looks like a nice town but I need to decide whether to try and stay a bit closer or not.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Fredericksburg is pretty far out-over 65 miles and served by one of the worst commuter traffic nightmares in the D.C. area-I-95/295.

Metro is not an option for you from there. Closest station would be Springfield, and driving from Fredericksburg to Springfield would be just as big of a pain. There are so many issues-parking at Metro, etc.

You do have access to the commuter train-the Virginia Railway Express from Fredericksburg. Their website is here

http://www.vre.org/

VRE is only available on weekdays as it serves commuters, so if you are planning on making this trip on a weekend, then forget VRE as an option. If you are going to be there on a weekend, then Metro is a better option, but you still have to drive to Springfield to the closest station which is about 55 miles.

Now Fredericksburg is a great base for Kings Dominion.

Give us more details on the dates you will be staying and we will help you iron it out and give you more options.

Thanks for the advice. We will be leaving IL on Saturday June 13th, arriving DC area around 3pm on Sunday 14th. Was hoping to spend Monday and Tuesday in DC, first day doing a tour bus, seeing some of the monuments and possibly Arlington. Tuesday again in DC - probably seeing Natural History and Air and Space Museums. Wednesday was planning on going to Kings Dominion to give the kids a bit of a reward after 2 days of sightseeing. Thursday moving on to Natural Bridge in VA. Looks as though I will have to look again for a campsite closer to DC. Originally I had looked at Cherry Hill in the College Park area - but there again this is a longer drive to the amusement park. Overall though, this is looking like the best option. Shame...Fredericksburg looks really nice. Perhaps on another trip....

BitmomIllinois,

We are currently staying at the Motel6 in Federicksburg and have been traveling to DC with ease. It takes us about 40 mins to get to exit 169A which is where the Springfield Metro station is. Parking is 4.50 a day, you just have to leave out of the 4th floor and pay by credit card only. A unlimited pass on Metro is 6.50 a day per person. The unlimited pass is valid after 9:30am so it gives u time to eat breakfast and sleep in. I will be honest we haven%26#39;t explored Fredricksburg yet but so far everyone we have met has been very nice and at 39.99 a night it%26#39;s a steal! Good luck!
